The SWC has a 38mm Zeiss Biogon, which has an almost symmetrical lens- design. The lens is much closer to the film- surface, than it is at your 503.

That allows a different design with almost no disortion or other optical issues. But you can´t use this lens on a regular Hasselblad.

And Neil, remembering we have just seen an Apollo 17 photo on the last page, you can buy an SWC made for NASA right here. It costs a bit more than mine, but has a fancy yellow case.

Thanks Chris, very interesting. Incidentally I learnt today that the first camera used in orbit was an Ansco Autoset 35mm rangefinder brought by John Glenn and apparently bought at a local drugstore because nobody had thought of bringing a camera.

Anushka on the Xpan, this one is with Acros @400. First time I've tried shot Acros and I was hoping to get grit by pushing it but instead I feel that it just loses contrast. Shadows become smoky, but overall tone still smooth (I prefer the crunch from trix). I'll keep experimenting with it though.

I had a look at the larger image on Flickr and I see what you mean. There remains a lot in the midtones but then it's as if suddenly the information disappears towards the shadows. I would have expected the midtones to be affected more but also think it looks good. You've caught a nice moment and framed it well.

I looked at one of those super angelica lenses for my M6...........I like the look of that mate. My plan is another 21mm Lux for a SL

Thanks Neil. It's early days for me with the 21mm, like it so far, but like most things, too much isn't always a good idea.

Plan is to "compare the M6 and 21mm with my SWC, see if they are similar or the same.

Europe beckons next year and I would rather carry the M6 and a few lenses, including the SA21, than the M6 and a few lenses, and the SWC. It's nice and compact, but still a brute.

Yes, saw the SL is impending in your repertoire, I'm sure you'll have fun with that. And a 21 Lux will cap it off nicely I reckon, very envious.

This isnt a gear thread, but why someone would feel the need to plop down a small fortune for a 21 lux when one has an SWC or 40mm distagon is beyond me

No, and while I can't afford or justify it, more power to Neil if he can.

Plus, it's the Neil we know after all.

Good on ya Neil.

@Eoin is this the baby you have??

Whats the difference between my 503CW with my 40mm Disappointment and this.............is it something special and do I need one??

Later

Neil

Hi, Neil.

1) Yes, although mine is silver, and is a 903.

2) The FOV is basically the same.

3) This is a fixed lens - It is the 'Q' of Hasselblads.

4) Your phone is making a rather harsh review of the 40mm Distagon?

5) It is 'special', in that it is a fixed 38mm clunky camera (which I like).

6) No, you don't need one. The FOV is already covered by your 40mm.

If I recall correctly, it's been listed on ebay at various times over the last 12+ months. I'm pretty sure it used to be at USD $38k, so is possibly not turning out to be quite as 'collectible' as thought.

Hi, Adam.

i) Because of not wanting to carry a SWC / 503 w/40mm Distagon when traveling (which Neil does every month), and wanting to use digital.

ii) Because he enjoys it, and has the funds available.

iii) Because Neil is Neil, and Leica may well have folded, were it not for his ongoing injections of cash in return for some equipment (which regularly fails), a book, and a USB thumbdrive.

You don't have to look very far on the forum to find people with 4 or 5 copies of a 50mm lens, so having a FOV covered by very good lenses in 2 different formats (and, in this case, 2 different mediums) is not that big a stretch.
