I've published 5 coffee table books and there is more writing in your message above than in all my books put together.........................I want to show off my pictures rather than my ability of righting :)

Hey, Neil. I'd really like your phone to write a book (with or without photo's). It has the best sense of humour I have ever encountered. My current favourite is the "Act of Peppermint" one - In fact, that would make a good title for a book! ;)

Henry - I've been following this thread on and off but, throughout, keep on coming across numerous not so subtle digs at digital aspects, such as "digital grain." My feeling is that one can love film without hating digital. I also notice that you're interested in comparisons with digital, particularly the Leica M-Monochrom, about which you asked someone some pages back — it seems difficult to find things in this thread, so I don't have the reference.

I've been thinking for the last nine months been about returning to film and have started a thread called, Go back to film? Sell the M9-P/MM? Wanna talk me down? It's only three pages and has numerous examine of Tri-X and M-Monochrm shots that may interest you.

On page 3, I come to a conclusion (posts #92, 96 and 100) that, right now, as long as there is this excellent, small hand-development lab in Chiang Mai that I use, it’s worthwhile for me to continue shooting film — and, if I go back to digital, it is likely to be in “binges” of six months or a year and then return for a binge of film.

Conceptually I've thought the following: if you think of two circles (digital and film) intersecting for the bulk of their areas, leaving on either side a crescent that does not intersect — take the crescent of the film circle: that's the area of film properties, or "look", that one cannot get from digital without "major fakery." That's what makes me interested in film. In the referenced thread someone on has been kind enough to draw these circles to make the concept vivid graphically.

An example of what drives my film shooting can be illustrated through the two sets of photographs below — one film, one digital; one set of unposed street portraits and the other a set of landscapes in the same locality. Now, remember I’m only thinking of 35mm and Tri-X for film, not taking into account medium format or slower films, which could change the size of the crescents.

I agree with Gary, Mitch. I like all of the photo's above. I use both a Monochrom, and various film cameras. I like them all for different pieces of the crescent puzzle. Although I could live quite happily with any one of them (and with any one of my lenses), I feel that they compliment each other in a very inspiring way.

As mentioned in another thread, developing your own films can add a level of personal investment to the creation process, even if combined with putting business the way of the inspiring ladies with their Chiangmai set-up.

One question, Mitch - Is there a particular reason for stand-developing the Tri-X?

Eoin - thanks. I first tried stand development because if I had a mixture of shots at ISO 400 and 1600 on the same roll: the Tri-X portrait above was shot at ISO 1600. Then, I noticed that I liked the way stand development rendered the tightest tones in very bright and harsh tropical light.

On developing film myself: very difficult because I'm a nomad moving annually each year between Washington DC, Paris and Thailand. It's too much of a hassle to keep chemicals and develop film even in two of these places.

Understood, Mitch. How about if you do a deal with the enterprising ladies to do your own developing using their facilities? Note - I understand if this has no interest for you, as what I like is not necessarily what someone else likes.

Incidentally, I must get their address off you, as I pass through Chiangmai most times I go to visit my family in Lampang.

Mitch, if you move continually, it is not easy to transport his photo lab , it's obvious
May be I am lucky to be able to have the complete photo chain, since the film that I develop myself

and which I then print on paper with my enlarger.

Eoin, TriX is the most suitable according to me for the portrait

I already post this link but I post again today

They also have a rental darkroom, but it's difficult for me to find the time for this. They are near Wat Phra Singh. You can see the listing on the right hand side of this web page. It's best to call before you go ti make sure it's open. If the number listed doesn't work, drop me a line and I'll give you another one.

Mathias,

The grain is really wonderful on these pictures.

This beautiful grain that many software photos want to imitate but that is not the same fortunately for the film.

What's CHM100 ?

Thanks for posting and you're always welcome  :)

Best

Henry

Hi Henry,

thank you for your kind words....I'm from Berlin and we are lucky here, Fotoimpex is in Berlin and Adox is near to Berlin...CMH100 is from Fotoimpex and it is the same film like Kentmere 100 and APX 100 new....

....for the discussion around film and digital....I shoot both and I do enjoy both....in the linked thread there are more pictures from rugby in Berlin....same day, same light, at ASA 160 with M-E and M4 ....again, I like both

As a side note: as usual the best photo opportunities (at least imho) presented themselves outside the allowed time of the

"Lisbon Challenge" .  As I managed to captured at least a few of them I somehow manage to live with that frustration

Well, I shoot film so I think that makes me a film photographer :) I do use my phone for snaps of my family, but for everything else I'm all in film.
