...here's a pic I shot in winter in Firenze, Italy. In front of the "Annunciatione " Fresco by Fra Angelico in San Marco. ( Leica IIIf / Elmar 3:5 / 50 lens Kodak 400TX -  photo on baryte paper scanned to upload)

Jean-Marie

Welcome. Jean-Marie. I like this shot, with the movements in the foreground sort of replicating those in the fresco. It can be viewed as a single scene.

Special for Henry ( but for all of You aswell ) : the Lying Bouddha Henry posted his pic  - from a different angle. I took it in February 2016. Leica IIIf, Kodak TX400.

Also, I love colour, but I don't want to go for the "full" equipment again... also, I really want to limit everything to a minimum of technical luggage

Maybe I'm wrong for our time with this, but that's ok for me. I know my kids want different "Kicks" from pics. And that's also ok :-)

I like this -- quirky, unusual.  The Buddha's smile seems to say that Buddha is on the fun too.  Happy image.  :)

Another one from last week's convalescence, shot at f/11 (same film etc). Really shows how bored I was...

Another unassuming masterpiece, Philip.  I am very impressed on many levels!

WOW, Gary.  That is some view and some framing.  Simply fantastic :)

A little graffiti from the Boardwalk of Asbury Park, NJ.   I was surprised to see how vivid Portra rendered the colors in both images, especially the second. Both represent how I see it when there in person, with hardly any editing in post.  Velvia seems to be an obvious and popular choice for graffiti, Portra seems to do a pretty good job to me....no?

Marc - This is really cool and excellent.  You have to point me to this place.  My view is that you can't go wrong with color film assuming proper exposure (which you have).  But having said this, I still would have chosen Velvia 50 as the ideal for replicating the color palette in an incredible way.

Home for 6 months of the year...all shot with Portra 400 while in Sunny Nigeria

Neil - Very nice but it looks like you are underexposing the portra by at least a full stop and maybe two.  either that or your scanner isn't giving you the "flat" that it should be.  The grain just doesn't look right.  You should have much cleaner results especially with the gear you are using.  I don't know if you are using the meter in your prism finder but if you are you should turn it off and just go manual and don't forget that color films do not have much latitude in the shadows but have LOTS of latitude in the highlights.

Hey Adam....as always, thanks for your kind words and reply.  Asbury Park is a photographer's pot of gold.  I go so much but have never really shot it...too busy with other things ;)  There are two ends to the boardwalk, Convention Hall and the Casino.   The Casino is an old landmark that is more of less an old frame of a building from what was and where these shots were taken.  When I was there last (taking these shots) it started to get dark before I had time to really play.   Now that beach season is over, there's plenty of gold to shoot without people getting in the way.  I plan to go back soon to with more ammo and more time.  I'd be happy to give you the tour, grab Steve while you're at it ;)

I'm a bit surprised to see how much grain you have on what appears to be scenes with plenty of light?  I've used Portra 400 and haven't experienced anything close.  Could this be the development process as opposed to the film stock?

Here is another scan using Vuescan. The PP is exactly the same ACR plus one CEP preset

This some nice SWC bokeh with beautiful Ektar reds!  Looks like I can grab it out of the screen.   How far were you from the focus point?

Thanks, Marc.  The point of focus of the yellow stalk was about 12" away, which is the minimum focus distance for the SWC.

They both have more grain than I like. The developing is out of my control as such and I rely on a 3rd party to do my color film

I am not sure it is the lab.  How do you meter?

HI Neil....honestly I did't even think to question your metering, I just put the blame on the lab.  I think Adam is correct here, "thin" or underexposed color negatives will lead to grainy frames.  For Portra, I'd suggest metering in a bit more of the shadows into your settings and then add about 1/2 to 1 stop more.  I think you will find the results more in line with your expectations and to what you see elsewhere for this film stock.

Here is a test image scanned with Silver fast and Vuescan

First one below is with Vuescan.............I love the way this has been scanned except for the big frigging vertical line down the middle.

The second scan is via Silverfast and as you can see the quality of the scan is sh!te compared to the Vuescan scan but as you can also see there is no vertical line

Can someone try and help me again with the settings, especially those using Silverfast. I contacted someone at Vuescan but they answer my mails now!!

They were both auto adjusted using ACR with no other adjustment

the first is very well exposed.

That line is mysterious!

What scanner are you using?

I can't believe Hamrick hasn't been more helpful.  I know that he moderates a vuescan group in Google and is always online to help answer questions.
