Hello Gary,

I keep coming back to this photograph of yours and I’m trying to figure out why. One indifferent viewer would probably call it a tourist’ shot, then add “but a serious amateur’s.” If it is, it is a finest example of a shot by a tourist coming back home and bringing some exquisite photographs.

The photograph appears to benefit from a subtle balance; there is an “X” of lines crossing the field, one line made of the water, the other of the land; the two blue hues of the water work together nicely, sort of implying a  “movement” from the deep ocean to a serene gulf; then comes the glorious sandy coast, almost pure white, an impossible to ignore invitation to bathe.

Maybe it’s all that, maybe it’s because it is reminiscent of my birthplace; but if HCB’s criterion of a good photograph—the time spent looking at it—is of some value, then this photograph is really good!

Paul

Thank you for the kind words Paul.

The honest side of me says it is merely an aerial shot, a view in which I partake on a regular daily basis.

This would have been taken while a student was flying, it would have been summer, so the "air conditioning" would have been on, ie: the doors off, making for easy photography from a nice height.

The fact it was where I spent a fair chunk of my youth is relevant, but it is one of many shots taken along this stretch of coast, and most have similar stories.

Appreciate your compliments though, very much.

Gary

Here's a cactus with sabris fruit cluster of a different variety....

Like a palm of a hand that one would not want to kiss :)

Velvia 50 (pushed 1/2 stop b/c to salvage inadvertent underexposure)

SWC

Wow this light green is beautiful Adam.So Adam you admit that your cactus is like human :)

About your two pictures in comparison posted above, I recognize Velvia by the blue sky.

Ektar is a bit clearer.

Regards

Henry

third one.  Sony a7ii with 90mm Elmar f4.  added yellow.  subtracted magenta.

These were taken in winter (March 2016).

fourth one.  Leica IIIf with Portra 400 scanned.  I'm not sure which lens, but I think it's 50mm Summicron collapsible.

attachicon.gifRoll 2324 S22 med.jpg

This was in summer (August 2016).  Although it's the same model and same location, the season has something to do with the look of the image, as in summer there was more bounce light from a white wall, a brown fence, and a green tree.

Thanks Fin for posting your pictures in comparison.

The first thing I notice is the color of skin more natural in Portra 400. A bit magenta or red in A7

As you know , skin of the face has pores anatomically speaking , in A7 pixels they are "smoothed" by camera software and they are absent > visible when enlarged (crop 100%) ! :)

The iris of eyes not the same color too , green in Portra , darker and color not defined in A7 ?

Might be goats these ones Henry, but yes, we are a nation of sheep.

There is/was a saying, "14 million sheep, 4 million people" in NZ.

Gary

It makes 3 sheeps per person :D

Goodness gracious Adam, you did have fun with the SWC.

I thought the Dead Sea series was superb, but these are as well, all different, all superb.

Gary

Thanks a lot, Gary.  And like with the Dead Sea photos, these cacti photos will have tried your patience by the time I am done :)

Thanks, Henry.   I agree with you about the velvia 50/Ektar difference on that photo.

Gosh, your daughter is really going to enjoy that old Kowa mate.

Gary

I think you're right, Gary. It looked like possession was 9/10 of the law, as soon as she picked it up. Somewhere I have the first film she shot with it, so I'd better find it and digitise it for her - I don't want her to think that she scavenged something useless off me...
