Yes, in a word, painful it is Eoin.

If all I had was a few older trannies in anything larger than 35mm I'd not be bothering, but the SWC bug got me a week ago, found one, in need of a CLA, and this has been done.

It's a weird beast, not sure if it is destined to stay with me, but I'll give it a go. The finder for example is non-glasses friendly, in fact without glasses it isn't even friendly. I'm not sure if I want to use it as a view camera, on a tripod with the ground-glass back, so we'll see how the first few rolls go.

If it stays, then I am up the creek, and will source an Epson, an older one to start with, to get my feet wet so to speak.

Gary

Hi Gary - sorry for the delay. I am here in Jerusalem settling in for the summer and it is hard to keep up in a comprehensive way.

Congrats on your SWC! You will love it.

The very most important thing to remember is to keep it perfectly level to avoid distortion. The distortion-free genius of the lens is really only borne out with a level camera. There is a certain amount of leveling correction that one can do in post, but it is best to get it as perfect as possible in the camera.

As for the finder, i rarely use it in controlled settings. Instead, i typically use a focusing screen and prism finder. These allow for mich better framing and clinical focus. I get a lot out of these and am able to best visualize my shot before i take it. I would highly recommend it.

Enjoy it and i look forward to see your photos!

Best,

Adam

Ok big shot I am convinced!!!' :-)!!!! Portra 400. It is. But mostly because of the latitude I can better overexpose the shadows and keep the sky

LOL, darn, and here I was considering sending it off to you too.

Weather is absolute garbage here at the moment, and looks like it will be for a while (a week is a while for me), so not much to do but dream of pictures.

Thank you Adam,

I will utilize the finder in the first instance, simply due to not having the ground-glass back/adapter. It is on the "to acquire" list, but they are accordingly priced, like most things SWC.

The camera now has an A-12 plus an A-16. Back in my 500C/M days, shooting stock slides I used the A-16 extensively, due to the economics. Having seen the SWC in the flesh I am now wondering if I was a bit hasty, in that the camera really is a "square format" style. Maybe, and I won't know until I try it fully. The finder with the A-16 for example becomes a guess at best, top and bottom. Heck, that finder is already a guess. :D

Point(s) taken about the leveling of the camera, I'll do my best with that.

Biggest question now is "what film"? I'd always planned on B&W, and something like FP4+, but with the increase in real estate, I can possibly afford to o to 400, so Tri-X perhaps. Then colour, I'd figured Ektar, 'cos you have such sterling results, but I also see many (you especially) suggesting Portra, and Portra 400 would possibly fit the bill perfectly. Either way, a back with B&W and another with colour (neg).

Enjoy the time in Jerusalem.

This, and virtually every shot from this series (Yemen?) should be in a book JM.

Seriously, you've considered this?

Gary

Thanks a lot Gary,

I shall think about it seriously !

Meanwhile I hope you get to see the results from your SWC soon, the quality of  its lens  is truely outstanding !

I like the motion in this, one feels the breeze and hears the wheat rustling...

Thanks Chris for your comment , sometimes film pictures specially nature flowers

look really like a painting. Look at this painting of Claude Monet the impressionist

as you already know :)
