Since Henry is giving me such grief about shooting colour, I took a roll of old outdated Neopan SS 100 out today, more as a bit of a test for the camera and lens combos I had in mind. The images were secondary, I was trialing a few things.

For Gary,  without color life is so sad :D

for the "nuance" and "subtleness" of color in film :)

Nice colors, the 28 summicron, is really a good lens IMO, I had it, and sold it and regret it now... I had replaced it by a 35 cron asph for a moment.

The verdict? Every time I shoot an old outdated film, I hear Adam laughing, saying,"told you so".

I'd read Neopan SS 100 was gritty and I wasn't disappointed.

The good news is it was the only roll, so we don't have to endure too many images from it.

This is interesting Gary. How outdated and was it not frozen while stored?

I believe the SS 100 was the predecessor of Acros with the more classic grain (right?). The grain almost looks like desaturated digital "splotches" (which I believe is the terminus technicus). I enjoy the tonality though.

Btw, I don't find it 'wrong' to shoot old stock (and I'm not saying Adam thinks so, just to be clear :) ). Virtually every transparency photo I've posted in this thread is shot on old stock of varying age.

Hi Philip.

I'm not really sure of the age, nor it's storage as I bought a batch of outdated film at auction recently. I've got a few more rolls of colour neg, then about half a dozen Provia and it's done. The Provia is in the freezer now though, although I'm not sure I'll be shooting it even, as proseccing is getting more and more rare here.

not bothered at all by this, Gary.  Can't imagine why you would think I would be. :)  B&W film is a totally different story.  I suppose that, at some level, the age of the film can be difficult to decipher due to the many other variables at play with the film (exposure, development, print/scan and editing).  I quite like the grain here.

I shot this while waiting for my train to arrive at the platform as the late afternoon light streaming through and lighting the tracks and the edges of the platforms.

A couple more from that outdated roll of Neopan SS100.

These from the M6 and with the 50 Summicron (one with the collapsible, the other with the V3 50 Summicron)

A cowslip from only a few weeks ago. The spring flowers (along with the other great signifiers of spring like the Orange Tip butterfly) have now faded – a reminder of how transient the seasons are.
