gnuyork Posted June 14, 2016 Share #17061 Posted June 14, 2016 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) If Dirk permits me , I post this picture just to show that the correction (LR) of a little veil is very subtle on my Eizo screen ! I try to adjust temperature (a little) and add a little contrast , I have this 27577062581_947f3e689e_b-Mod-Modok.jpg CR Dirk Your opinion Dirk ? Rg H. So this is interesting... on my monitor viewed on google chrome, Doc's LR adjustment looks way overdone, but if I view the same in Safari, that's not the case... I do find this with my own photos that I post, but I did not realize it can happen from other's post. Maybe I should revert back to iusing Safari as my default browser... gbealnz Posted June 14, 2016 Share #17063 Posted June 14, 2016 Recent photograph from Keith's neck of the woods in Wiltshire. Tmax 100. It's volcanic Ian, or what? Just curious. Gary
wattsy Posted June 14, 2016 Share #17064 Posted June 14, 2016 (edited) It's volcanic Ian, or what? Just curious. Gary It's man-made, Gary. Nobody knows why it was built but it is presumably ceremonial (there are many theories – some more credible than others). It's over 4000 years old. Sadly, in the interests of conservation and general busybodyness, English Heritage no longer allow anyone to walk up it (which is somewhat ironic considering how close they have come to wrecking it themselves with their botched excavations and repairs over the years). wattsy Posted June 14, 2016 Share #17067 Posted June 14, 2016 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) More cow parsley (its flowers – along with spring itself – have now faded). This is a few miles from Silbury Hill. In the distance you can just make out the equally ancient monument of East Kennet Long Barrow. We are obviously too lazy out here, anything resembling that we have commissioned the earth to provide, in a volcanic way, LOL. No shortage of them about Auckland too, something like 25 old cones I believe. Very interesting, and covered in snow, what a sight. Gary
gbealnz Posted June 14, 2016 Share #17069 Posted June 14, 2016 Another from the test roll in the R8, using the R28-70 and old Gold 200. As an aside, somewhere in this mess of fallen cherry leaves lies a little red dot, I noticed that it had escaped it's position on the 28-70. Look as I did, I can't find it, and I know that the next mow of the lawns will ensure I never find it. Gary Welcome, dear visitor! erl Posted June 14, 2016 Share #17070 Posted June 14, 2016 I dont find Ektar to be particularly difficult in landscapes/cityscapes. I dont really understand the logic of using portra as a crutch to get the look of ektar There are scenes for portra and there are scenes for ektar Adam, this is where personal preference must dominate. High saturation is where Ektar flourishes, but my (past) experience is highlighted by so many images I see posted here that grossly emphasize Red and frequently throw a cross cast of Cyan. Dirk's pics were the most recent. The logic of using Portra to get an Ektar look is somewhat perceived the wrong way. I would prefer to express it this way. If you want a saturated look, use Portra (typically neutral) and increase saturation in post. Why? Because Portra typically is easier to control than Ektar. This is not to say 'never use Ektar', but I would council to use it cautiously. The above assumes one is going to pass through a digital phase to achieve the end result. IF one is printing in a wet darkroom, then using Ektar is probably the only real option for achieving the saturated outcome, if desired. Ah! The pleasures of choice.

I actually somewhere in the mess that is my Leica storage drawer have a spare, I think. I bought a couple from a HK based seller, not genuine, but close enough, and possibly a similar price. If that fails, DAG it is. Gary
erl Posted June 14, 2016 Share #17073 Posted June 14, 2016 For Dirk, and other interested parties, I post my idea of colour correction of Dirk's Ferarri. It is not perfect but I think improved. I may have made the Red of the car a little too bright, but I was not there and am only guessing. Welcome, dear visitor! erl Posted June 15, 2016 Share #17078 Posted June 15, 2016 MT 227 that Portra 400 really is excellent. The neutral pavements hold up well in all that colour. Have you tweaked (slightly) the red in post? My guess is 'yes', but you may correct me. Anyway, it looks great.
A miller Posted June 15, 2016 Share #17079 Posted June 15, 2016 And as today comes to a close, some colour from a test roll I did yesterday. I'll space them out so as to not bore you too much. R8 R 28-70 Kodak Gold 200 (rather old Gold too, I can almost hear Adam moaning from here). Plustek 8100 Gary oh, I don't know, Gary. These are pretty good for consumer film. The one of the foliage is a little cool but I suppose it could be warmed up to suit. And the one of the horses is lovely. I've tried now to correct the colors a bit with Lightroom. What do you think about that? (I replaced the old pictures by the new ones on flickr, so the old version is not available there anymore) Ferrari on film by Dirk Raffel, auf Flickr Ferrari on film by Dirk Raffel, auf Flickr Ferrari on film by Dirk Raffel, auf Flickr These seem good enough to me, Dirk, especially for an indoor setting where Ektar is admittedly not at its best. the last three: Porsche on film by Dirk Raffel, auf Flickr Lamborghini on film by Dirk Raffel, auf Flickr Ferrari on film by Dirk Raffel, auf Flickr Very nice, Dirk. IF these are with Ektar, they disprove Erl's thesis that Ektar is oversaturated. These colors look quite subdued to me. The WB is not perfect, but it doesn't bother me. MT0227 Posted June 15, 2016 Share #17080 Posted June 15, 2016 (edited) Thanks for the kind words Erl. I do agree....Portra is excellent. I've only made adjustments to the highlights, shadows and a little pop in clarity. My workflow is Coolscan 9000 + VueScan, I use auto levels in the color settings with the generic color film option selected. I did add a touch of contrast to the tone curve within the VueScan settings prior to the scan....That's about it. MT 227 that Portra 400 really is excellent.
