Hardster Posted April 9, 2016 Share #13745 Posted April 9, 2016 Wow, this thread is skyrocketing - not only in quantity but also in quality. To bring it back to earth, I will try my best with some LoFi-shots out of my cheapo plastic toy cam Bild-1-20.jpg The Tallest Bild-1-335.jpg Yas Marina Circuit - Abu Dhabi Rollei Prego micron - Ektar - Coolscan IV I really like these. Almost painterly. The colours and composition, especially the second, remind me of the Australian artist Jeffrey Smart. Regards Hardy
honcho Posted April 9, 2016 Share #13746 Posted April 9, 2016 Wow, this thread is skyrocketing - not only in quantity but also in quality. In fact, you could hold it up if anyone asks what is meant by 'the film look'. There is a pastel softness to the tonal transitions that is clearly seen but difficult to define, maybe a combination of the lens and the emulsion, but I really like what I see here.

Just fantastic. a picture from the Hackett store in Zürich. Leica MP with TMAX400: Hackett by Dirk Raffel, auf Flickr Very nice, Dirk. Nice overall contrast level. Portra 400 (from memory)... a001 by Eoin Christie, on Flickr very lovely, Eoin. The subtle toning provides some really interesting texture. And there are good tones in the water despite the motion. It is a very "alive" photo...
Sparkassenkunde Posted April 10, 2016 Share #13749 Posted April 10, 2016 Brilliant dramatic shots and good use of that camera's panorama mode. I like these, James. Good work. James , nice color specially the second for the Nissan car ? "this thread is skyrocketing" I would say even more " It works in rocket fuel " - "not only in quantity but also in quality". plus it's true Thanks James Best Henry I really like these. Almost painterly. The colours and composition, especially the second, remind me of the Australian artist Jeffrey Smart. Hi James - Really love the photos, and agree with the comments about them, particularly the second one. Just fantastic. Thank you all for your more than friendly feedback, which is much appreciated. Before our vacation I struggled with the decision, which gear to take to the UAE with me, for a long time. As i knew that the Leica X Vario is a reliable and versatile companion, that is capable of outstanding results and I didn't want to pair it up with my MF gear, my choice fell on this crazy little fellow - the Rollei Prego micron (also known as Ricoh R1). Besides my other gear it feels like a toy, and I guess there are not that many folks around using these cams these days, but with every roll of film there come at least two or three keepers - and thats everything that counts. Additionally some rolls of EKTAR came into the bag. In PP i didn't have to do that much. As with almost any picture, I do the fine-tuning after scanning (with Vuescan) in Lightroom. With Ektar it usually takes some time to find the "right" white balance, afterwards some slight changes in lights (down - restoring), shadows (up - enlighten), white (up) and black (down). This increases the overall contrast. As my Coolscan IV tends to oversaturate the reds, I pull the saturation of red down (-20). The very strong vignette of this cameras lens is compensated with the lens correction tool in LR. Then some slight denoising and sharpening, export to jpg and the images are ready for degustation I usually work with one image per roll and than use the settings as profile for the rest of the images. I think, that the limitations of the camera, coupled with the good film material, in the end exactly produce the so called "film look". So once again, thank you all and keep this thread alive with your great work! Welcome, dear visitor!
