It's rather ironic that this debate should intrude on a forum dedicated to celebrated the joy of working with a limited and imperfect medium, film. But the reasons why we like film are probably closely related to the reasons some of us prefer analog and/or tube sound. It is the fact you have to work with them, to work around limitations, to tweak and refine. If I could get "perfect sound forever" (remember that?) with a cheap CD player, and perfect photography from digital, I would probably process some plastic files from the latest Canon while listening to a CD or an MP3 on an iPod for a short while, and then I would find myself going off and doing something more interesting.

I was obsessed with hifi at one time, and spent far more than I should chasing perfection. I think my best solid state amp was also French, a YBA1. CD players from Mission, Meridian, YBA and Counterpoint came and went until I settled on an Ayre. I could listen hard and try to decide which I liked the best, but there were two simple tests that were very reliable - did I rush home to play music rather than do anything else, and did it make me tap my feet? When I first got into tubes I realised that it was surpassing solid state in both respects. The addition of vinyl (with a Loricraft record cleaner - an amazing device!) was the icing on the cake. I still have the Ayre, but now it sits largely unused (it's good for SACD still) while I listen to vinyl with a Decca London Reference catridge/SME Va arm/SME 10 table/ Quad tubed electronics and Quad electrostatic speakers. I'm still obsessed, I suppose, but it's not about the equipment any more, it's about the music. And that's probably a good and healthy thing.

I will agree that detail and fidelity might measure better with solid state, but for my remaining hearing, the emotional response to the authenticity - such as it is - of analog tube sound is far more satisfying. After all, when I go the the opera for live performances things aren't perfect either. I guess I'm not looking for perfection, but whatever elusive quality it is that satisfies my needs in music. As I said, pretty much the same reasons I use film. I see no reason to change either habit.

Now this is an opinion, and I hope it's not BS. If this is to continue, we should move it to Barnack's Bar.

Chris , image and sound are part of our culture.

That said it depends on your level requirements as for the Leica lens or cameras
The marks that you quoted Chris are well known and some are very expensive. I know the great YBA :)

Ah mythical Quad electrostatic panels , a wonder with its Quad amplifier and preamp. tubes ....

You spoke of Sacdit's just that they are better than CDs because they are not registered such as CD,
reason of the difference. The Sacd are very similar to vinyl disc and give a satisfying sound .
Now it depends on your type of music.I love the voice and classical opera (Puccini, Verdi...) and solo piano ,

and sometimes when I hear a voice , it comes to me in the guts....  I have emotion when listen, that's so true :)

wonderful, soulful, look, Chris.  Well done.  You should shoot your family more (if you know what I mean  :)

I spent a good part of the day shooting 6cmX7cm B&W polariods  of my sons as they watched NFL football with my Linhof and Zeiss lens.  One gem after another....

I think Bill outdid me on the painful discourse from earlier today.  No amount of popcorn could have drawn me in to that (inside joke).  Thank goodness it is behind us.

Another quick visit - hopefully next year will be a little more controlable...

Just stumbled upon this late summer pic while looking for a suitable one for a greeting card. This one would be... different.

Keep it up and wish you all happy holidays!

Another handheld night shot using XP2.

Ric

Ric , as you show here , no need to spend a fortune to have cameras that rise to 25,000 Isos , a folly !

Make night photos for being like day. How useful ?  and this distorts a night photography that remains beautiful ...

We live in a great time !

Well done Ric

Thanks
