jip Posted September 8, 2015 Share #6682 Posted September 8, 2015 If the grain is sharp the scanner is fine, and you mis focused in the camera while taking the photo.
ReturningToFilm Posted September 8, 2015 Share #6683 Posted September 8, 2015 If the grain is sharp the scanner is fine, and you mis focused in the camera while taking the photo. I guess its most likely to be me that is the problem...! Can you comment on the grain sharpness on this image? I tried v hard to focus carefully on the lock of the door. Maybe I need to wear contacts when shooting, rather than my glasses......? Welcome, dear visitor! philipus Posted September 8, 2015 Share #6690 Posted September 8, 2015 Interesting and very detailed article, Jip (note, though, that NS4 runs on 10.6.8; interesting only for some with older Macs, I know). I didn't know the NS4 Digital ICE "Fine" setting is stronger than the Normal setting. Your article caused me to check the manual. This is quite the opposite from Vuescan's ICE setting so good to know. My workflow, when using NS, differs slightly as I make linear scans for "developing" in ColorPerfect. There are many ways to scan.
gsgary Posted September 8, 2015 Share #6691 Posted September 8, 2015 Ha! Might be asking about that depending on tests below..... Thanks Henry. I don't take any offence at all, I am grateful for your time to answer and help me! I shot a test roll last night of a tape measure using my new (to me) 35mm Cron ASPH, using a tripod at different focus distances and multiple f-stops. That will hopefully determine if my old 50mm lens was poorly calibrated (there was a mismatch at infinity lock with the rangefinder patch, which is not present with the new Cron), my focussing skills (or lack thereof)/camera movement and if the negatives are sharp under a loupe, then identify the scanner as being the problem? Has anyone else had problems with a Plustek 8100 not being sharp? Would the film section be a better place to discuss this? BW Paul I picked up the Plustek 7500i at our club auction for £12 what a bargain and love it my V500 doesn't get much use now, once you digitise a neg it needs a bit of sharpening while processing like any digital image
Doc Henry Posted September 8, 2015 Author Share #6692 Posted September 8, 2015 A bit more contrasty this time, both TTL 50/1.4A Double-X at EI1000 in HC-110:H. I really like this film. It has nice grain and reacts well to pushing. But it also gives very nice tonality if shot at EI 100/200. And, importantly, it dries flat.
