I like your last edit, Ellie, and think you managed to maintain the summery nuances that a scene like this has. I didn't manage to do that in this version, unfortunately. But I think it looks better than my previous edit because it is less washed out/more punchy and somewhat less green overall. Incidentally we shouldn't forget that how web browsers display photos is a big part of our perception, in addition to whether screens are calibrated overall.

 

This time I tried curves in Lab which is very similar to the colour balance tool except that it's entirely step less (being curves) and not limited to the rather rough divisions into shadows, midtones and highlights which colour balance uses. But I fear my skills are reaching their limits (I need to re-read Margolis's book, methinks). I like the blues in this version and think the whites in the clouds look better. A tricky thing with the clouds is that the big clouds also contain some of the darker purplish nuances that the far-away clouds have, but enhancing/keeping those risks bleeding in magenta into the white of the big clouds because of where the nuances are on the curve. There's sadly a slight cool or possibly over-green saturation to the greens in the field which I struggled to counteract. I'm sure someone with a keener eye and better adjustment skills than I can fix it perfectly. 

 

In any event it is a really lovely photograph whichever colour balance it has.

Thank you for this version, I really like the lack of magenta, crispier colors and the sharpening!

 

I think the original scan was near or a bit into the magenta, resizing tipped it over. I think for photos like this one has to just move the balance a tiny bit away from magenta, it could be enough.

Thank you Ellie. I actually didn't add any sharpening. It's only a result of the Lab curves, which added a tiny bit more contrast in the darker parts of the image.

 

I find that one of the more difficult things about colour correction is to identify the offending colour. For instance, magenta and red casts can look very similar depending on in which colour the cast is. Same with blue, green and cyan I find. Or it's just my eyes that need calibration lol.

This is from a very wet photowalk with a good friend (and Leica fanatic) of mine. It was pouring down. Luckily there were no electronics in the camera risking damage :)

Hi All ,  the first time I tried today to develop the film with a developer concentrated stock.

The film is TX400 Kodak (dev. time very fast  : 3 minutes 30) and the developer is Ilfotech HC Professional
The result is good :)
I'll post some photos, because the film is being dried  !

I can agonise over colour balance forever. And when I go back to a photo I'm rarely happy with the choices I made earlier. On my screen the first one looks more natural.

 

I'm also an Agfa Vista fan, here 200 pushed to EI800.

I no longer have Kodak D76 and so I try Ilfotech which has the advantage to keep in stock for a long time

concentrated like jelly

 

Leica MP (a great camera better than M7 IMO , remind my first SLR Leicaflex SL)

Summilux 35 Asph  great luminosity

Thank you Keith. It does get a bit grainy so the scans need a bit of TLC and post-processing wizardry. But it is a remarkably flexible film, esp. considering its price.

Wonderful photo and a great result, Henry. Amazing tonality. The 35/1.4 delivers in spades. I must look into that developer.

Hi Elie - How would you describe the rendering of this film?  I just put a roll through but haven't yet seen the results.  I am envisioning low gain and sharp but not really sure what I'm going to get...

Philip this is how i process :

 

Stock solution (jelly) : 1 part Ilfotech HC + 3 parts water

Work solution: 1 part stock solution + 3 parts water

Time dev: 3mns 30 sec at 20-22°C

Stop solution acetic acid: 30 sec.

Hi, I wish I could have the answer today, but my "test roll" was sent in by the photo store here last Monday. I think they send it to Germany for developing and this week they closed for a three week vacation. Perhaps I'll get the roll back week 32. I'll get higher resolution scans for this Pan F Plus 50.

I understand why Leica offered a TX400 roll  when buying the new Leica MA
This is one of the best b&w  film in my opinion  :  deep black, gray with nuances

Picture taken in contre-jour (sun at right) on one of the most beautiful avenues in the world

the "Champs Elysees Avenue" in Paris at 8 a.m (June 2015)

All details are visible in the shade ! fabulous , great and good dynamic of film and "no banding"

like in digital !

 

 

 

The newsagent is angry , he speaks by insulting when cleaning , his newspaper stand is tagged

in the night .

The lady did not see I take a picture because in a great hurry ... and my MP is very discreet,

maybe she did not see me shooting
