Hi Marc,

It's dangerous for your camera isn't ?

Is it in Thailand ?

Nice shot

Thank you very much Henry,

the photo was taken in Goa, India during rain season. We spent 5 days in Goa and "fortunately" we had sun for approx.  3 hours. I have never seen so much rain in my life. It was no problem for my MP but I noticed some humidity in my viewfinder which was gone after I placed my  camera under a ventilator.

best regards

very funny, Marc.  Most certainly not, although I'll bet that this guy would have been happy to hold my "reflector" while I took pictures...  ;)

Hi Allan,

You seem to prefer color negative to slide film when you're shooting color.  Given your location, I assumed there was no big difference in convenience or turnaround time.  Any comments you care to make in response could only help a beginner photographer.

Thanks,

David

Hi David - Firstly, let's just set the record straight that I am no more than a beginner myself.  I will likely always be a beginner because there is so much to learn and discover and I am teaching this all to myself. Assuming you still want to hear what I have to say, I think that with all of the great films out there, the particular type to be used is somewhat situational.  In my case:

1.  If I need speed (either bc of the need for a fast shutter and deep DOF or b/c the lack of light), I will almost always use portra 400 and push it one stop.  I will choose this over portra 800 b/c I like the rendering better, although many professionals love portra 800 and freely push it one or two stops.  I really haven't tried this very much b/c I don't like the out of the box rendering of skin tones with the 800 vs 400.  I will also say that Fuji Pro 400H is almost equally as suitable.  Its strengths that I have noticed are with the rendition of blues and greens.  I have, however, noticed that that the portra 400 tends to scan a little better than the fuji, although this is slight.  The biggest reason that I don't use Fuji Pro 400H more is b/c it is nearly double the price fo the portra 400.  While it is fun to mix it up ever once in a while, double the price is almost impossible for me to justify as a normal workflow

2.  I love portra 160 for those bright light situations in which a creamy skin tones and even pastel rendition is desired.  It is am amazingly well balance film, but slow.

3.  Slide film is wonderful but has somewhat severe limitations on exposure and dynamic range.  The chrome look is probably my favorite in many situations, including the beach, landscapes/flowers and edgy portraits.  The problem is that the slide films that are out there today are incredibly slow and the highlights blow super-quickly.  So you have to expose for the highlights and know that you will be giving up shadow detail.  So if the scene has high contrast (lots of darks tones and lots of light tones), you will surely get a high contrast scene without a lot of shadow detail (assuming you expose the highlights properly, which you realy want to do b/c blown highlights are not attractive and can ruin an image).  Having said this, even in a super sunny beach scene, a high contrast chrome rendition has that classic look that really can't be duplicated.   While I have never used the old Kodak kodachrome film, the images that I have seen with it are so sublime that I really wish it would come back.  Something tells me that it had a little more dynamic range and tolerance for highlights relative to the two fuji slide films that are on the market today.   So, all in all, while I LOVE slide film, I don't use it that much.

4. I view Cinestll 800 and 50 as specialty films that are wonderful for night time and very bright daylight situations (respectively).

The fun thing about this thread is that we can all see examples of different types of film and comment on them.  Part of the reason that I post is to hear what others have to say.

Best,

Adam

Best,

Adam

I agree with all that you have said in that post.  That was a bit of work for you, so please know I really appreciate it.

Also, I think you have great technical skill with your flash unit when street shooting.  After over 10 years, my 24D has yet to get an exposure right when set to automatic.  I set it on Manual and use the correct f-stop for the distance displayed on my lens after I've focused.  With Leica M viewfinders you can preset focus and appropriate aperture, then change your position until subject snaps into focus, then immediately take the picture.

Kodachrome 200 had enough dynamic range to compete well with today's Portra 400.  Kodachrome 64 was nice enough, but had very restricted dynamic range.  If it was still around, I'd still buy Provia 100F.  I've only been using Provia 100F since Fuji cancelled the 400-speed slide film.  I love it.  It doesn't color-shift as badly in open shade or indirect light like the 400-speed did.  It does Caucasian flesh tones as good as Kodachrome.

Thank you for your remarks concerning Portra 160.  Since I started viewing the "I like film" topic I've always preferred it to Portra 400 but thought it was my monitor until I read your words.  Phew!  Am I relieved. I find that the Portra 160 photos I view here are exactly as you described.  The pastels and creaminess reminded me of Kodachrome.

Cheers,

David
