I like natural color of film versus digital, soft lines of film and nice bokeh in background

I came across this old photograph, from 1999 the other day. It was taken in Glasgow, on the day of a solar eclipse. It was shot on my M6 and 35mm Summicron version 1 eight element. I didn't take the picture (I'm the one in the middle) - my friend Gavin took it.

But it reminds me of why I like photography so much. A camera is the closest we have, at the moment, to a time machine. I look at this picture and it transports me back to that day. There was some patchy sunshine, but when the eclipse happened, the light became really unusual. It's hard to explain, but everything felt different. The birds all began to sing. You knew you were witnessing, involved in, something rare. I'll always remember it.

The woman in the red was Katrina, my girlfriend. She died in 2007. She's one of the reasons I could never sell my M6. My M6 is a machine, an object I can hold, and it was there. It's been all around the world with me, it's borne witness to events in my life. I could never part with it. It's a part of me.

Anyway, photography, and especially Leica photography - it's very special.

Best wishes all,

Colin

A very poignant description of the day and it's importance, Colin. Cameras are truly time machines, and photographs

have the power to instantly take us back to a time or place.

Mike.

+1 with Mike

I still have some negatives that date from the 1970s that its still good for printing without loss of quality.

Not sure this is the case of digital images. I just lost all my photos on an external hard drive and I have recovered

only a few photos using the Recuva software

Maybe seeing life through birth and death because of my profession, I took this photo in memory of my friend who died of "sudden death" last week

I also took wedding photos that you saw earlier

For me the memory is important

at the exit of the Mass of his funeral

Kodak Portra 160 color is better than on my M8

Hello Henry,

my condolences

Death is part of life - it is always our lives on our side - it is right next to us, we do not notice it because we live ....

a school friend once told me: "I do not do photos, I have a memory log, everything is saved and accessible at any time .....

she forgot something ..... I lent her my photo album

i think i choose b / w ..... it looks quiet
