Doc Henry Posted December 2, 2013 Author Share #641 Posted December 2, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Dear all contributors, and especially Henry I've just discovered this thread, it took me some time to go through, and I like what I see. I am perhaps not 100% in agreement with all that's being said here, but then, for now at least, I am only photographing using film. My criteria has been: would I make any better photos using digital, and, for me, for now, the answer is NO. I particularly like the streets and scenes of Paris (and France in general), and I envy you, Henry for your photographic opportunities, and how well you are able to convert the things you see into memorable images. I spend much too little time there! Anyway, keep this going Best regards Christoph Hi Christoph, Thank you for watching and for leaving your comment To the question do you take great photos with a digital camera or film, my answer is you can with both ... but for shades of color or gray in b&w, the film remains for me the référence. There is also the image side a bit synthetic (due to camera software that smooths all edges, something that film can not make with silver grains and 3 layers of silver). I say that after 4 years of digital Leica M9 and M8. The proof is that designers Leica CCD come from Kodak and they try to find colors that are close to the film (Kodak Portra is an example) Best Henry

tookaphotoof Posted December 2, 2013 Share #642 Posted December 2, 2013 To me, film just seems to have some sort of feel to it. Maybe the lack of absolute scharpness? Hard to explain. Anyways, I've made a mistake in my former post, resulting in uploading a photo twice. Can't find a way to edit the post, but it should have been this one: LeicaM 519 - no luck by Tookaphotoof, on Flickr

tookaphotoof Posted December 2, 2013 Share #649 Posted December 2, 2013 Henry, I'm non stop asking myself if I should pick up a used M8, M9 or simply a new M-E for the sake of warranty. Sometimes, with photos like this I wonder why I would bother at all thinking about adding a digital M to my setup. Doc Henry Posted December 2, 2013 Author Share #650 Posted December 2, 2013 Tooka, I use less now my M8 and M9 but I use a lot my M7. Somehow the M8 and 9 became my second cameras . I take pictures of surgeries in the operating room with digital cameras, more practical. For the pleasure I take pictures with M7 You can buy the M8 , if you want to make b&w, which I find excellent for it (but also for color) and buy good Leica lenses (Summilux) , instead of taking more expensive ME ! tookaphotoof Posted December 2, 2013 Share #652 Posted December 2, 2013 Although I'm coming from a full dslr setup with Zeiss lenses (simply couldn't live with the L glass) I think you might be right Henry. The MP is my main camera, so it might be a waiste of money adding an M-E just for the sake of full frame and warranty. Most of my photos will be taken with the MP (and M6). Food for thought... tookaphotoof Posted December 3, 2013 Share #655 Posted December 3, 2013 Henry, I don't know where you need it for exactly, so I might be saying something stupid. Wouldn't a simple compact like the rx100II be good enough for that? I thought about my own first world problem today. Decided to skip the digital Leica M for now. Even if I find an M8 for 1.000-1.100 I need to add some money for a couple of ir filters. Something inside me tells me I don't want to go back to a crop sensor, so I should actually budget for an m9. I can buy loads of film for that! Spending about 3.500 on a camera I won't use a lot is waisting money. Happily waiting for a used 28 Elmarit and Biogon to test them both thoroughly in b/w and color. On a film body off course! LeicaM 530 - tape by Tookaphotoof, on Flickr

For the M240, I think the colors are "commonplace", "generic" as they say some photographers, perhaps this is because the CMOS versus CCD sensor (M9 and M8) This is starting to sale M240 in second hand after less than one year output Why? and new I think it is a little expensive ! Tooka , what scanner for film photos ? Best Henry
tookaphotoof Posted December 4, 2013 Share #657 Posted December 4, 2013 Henry, at the moment I'm scanning with an Epson V750. Still need to order the film holders from Betterscanning for it. Post processing is done in Aperture. Is dreadfully slow at times and buggy after my last update, so I've just signed up for a Adobe Lightroom to see how things goes. Anyways, for black and white I mainly use Ilford HP5+. Just started to shoot some color too. Mostly with Portra400. As I love to have a depth of field I usually don't bother with ISO100 film unless I'm shooting with the Hasselblad on a Tripod. Ektar is great for that. tookaphotoof Posted December 4, 2013 Share #659 Posted December 4, 2013 Gary, my film tends to curl a bit. With those holders you can get your film as flat as possible. Also, the holder is hight adjustable. As it's not too expensive it's worth a try. If you have some sort of Flickr, PX, whatever account, you could share that. Although I love my Leica's I'm not married to them. Would love to see the photos made with your Rollei 35.
