Yes, I did reset the date and time. When I got it, the date showed something like Jan. 29, 2007 at about 1 o'clock. I reset it for April 2. However, I would think that before they sent the camera to me, that the Leica people would have put a battery in it to make sure that it was running correctly...on the other hand, if it was coming from Germany without a battery, and was not rechecked in NJ, it was probably several days or a week in transit. The box, however, came from NJ, and there was nothing inside that would tell me if it was shipped from Germany. It was sent second day air from NJ, so it was in-transit in the US only for two days.

After several more hours in the camera, the battery has stabilized at 4.09v.

I was wondering...if the camera is supposed to shut down after the voltage or the charge drops to a certain level, what would happen if there is a flaw either in that circuit or in the software that runs it, or a circuit inside the battery, so instead of shutting down, the camera continues to draw power? Is that even possible?

I ask because just before I had the sudden death with my previous camera, I had started doing that three-cycle full-discharge overnight thing, the "conditioning," that was being recommended at that point. Before, I'd go out and shoot for a while and when the battery indicator got down to the last bar, I'd slap it in the charger and recharge it, and didn't have any problem doing that. I think that the battery with the very low voltage level might have been the last one I'd been doing that with...
