Lightroom edits on two computers

Hi, fairly recent convert to Lightroom, which in version 4.3 I'm running on my iMac (OSX 10.6.8) and my MBP (OSX Lion).

 

Each has its own catalogue, but they are essentially of the same files, held on an external hard drive, shared across the network.

 

I'm trying to work out if develop settings when working on one computer are revealed on the other one, as would be the case in Adobe Bridge under similar circumstances. I cannot see anything in LR Preferences that might affect this. Should the sidecar .xmp files not apply across both computers?

 

Any guidance would be helpful, it is a pain working on the same file on both computers and having no continuity.
