M8 noise reduction strange behavior

My M8 did this noise reduction thing. It said Noise reduction and began to count down. Then these sparkly images appeared on my card. What caused this? How come I cannot find away to repeat this process.Thanks
This, I believe, happens when you use a very low shutter speed. I've noticed it does that when shooting night photography.

Many digital cameras do this.

The camera takes a dark exposure of the same length and then subtracts it from the image. That way the noise resulting from the long exposure is reduced in the final result.

You can repeat the process by taking an exposure with the lens cap on. The exposure itself will take about 32 seconds and then come the blinking lights. Once this is all over you can push PLAY, as the image comes up there will be small light spots before it all - more or less - blacks out. Pretty confusing when it happens first.
