I just formatted a 2GB Lexar Pro 133x and it took about 4-6 seconds. If the card you are using is taking longer then that then there is something wrong with the card. DaveEP Posted March 31, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted March 31, 2007 15 seconds for a 2 GB SanDisk Ultra II (all my cards are Ultra II's) Â Yes, 15 seconds for the SanDisk Ultra II (2GB) on mine too. Both cards format almost instantly on my Canon 1D cameras (maybe 2 seconds)  It will be interesting to hear other comments and experiences.
stunsworth Posted March 31, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted March 31, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Perhaps the M8 is doing a 'real' format where as the cards in a Canon aren't. I have to admit I've always felt that the format of a 2 gig card on my 5D is too quick for it to be a low level format.

You really can't judge the speed of a format from one camera to another, unless they are the same model. The canon might not really format the card. The Canon might just erase the file table and setup the directory/folder structure, Quick format, where as the Leica might actually format the card. Also the CPU in the Leica is not as high powered as other digital cameras.
robsteve Posted March 31, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted March 31, 2007 I get about six seconds to format a 2gb Ultra II. Â Just remember that with the Canon you will be formatting more often since it shoots 8fps

Well I don't format my cards every time I copy images off of them. I don't see the need to do that.
stunsworth Posted March 31, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted March 31, 2007 Ed, what Robert was alluding to was that with a fast motor drive you change cards more often. Personally I format cards _every_ time I re-insert them into a camera (Leica, Panasonic or Canon), it's one less thing to go wrong.
