Format sd takes a longtime?

I have noticed that the format process with M8 takes a long time -probably at teast twice as long as my DSLR.

Is this normal?

thanks

What is a long time (# of Seconds)?

I just formatted a 2GB Lexar Pro 133x and it took about 4-6 seconds. If the card you are using is taking longer then that then there is something wrong with the card.

Yes, 15 seconds for the SanDisk Ultra II (2GB) on mine too.

7 seconds for a Transcend 2GB (150x) card.....

12 seconds for a Transcend 4GB (150x) card....

Interesting .... a bit more investigation shows that the SanDisk Utra II is 10 seconds whilst the Sandisk Utra II Plus (with the built in USB connector} is 15 seconds. Both cards format almost instantly on my Canon 1D cameras (maybe 2 seconds)

It will be interesting to hear other comments and experiences.

Just did a Ultra II 1GB and it took 6 seconds.

You really can't judge the speed of a format from one camera to another, unless they are the same model. The canon might not really format the card. The Canon might just erase the file table and setup the directory/folder structure, Quick format, where as the Leica might actually format the card.

Also the CPU in the Leica is not as high powered as other digital cameras.

I get about six seconds to format a 2gb Ultra II.

Just remember that with the Canon you will be formatting more often since it shoots 8fps :)

Just what does shooting 8 FPS have to do with formatting a card?

Well I don't format my cards every time I copy images off of them. I don't see the need to do that.
