glenerrolrd Posted March 31, 2007 Share #1 Posted March 31, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) OK the backorder situation seems behind us ..if you want a new M8 you can find one . Some of the early adapters are starting to sell and eBay always has a few available. Even some dealers are offering "factory rebuilt" models. But does this make sense? I sure would like a 2nd body ..but big questions. My understanding is that Leica warrenties are not transferrable? Seems risky considering the past history of problems? Do you have a POV? Shootist Posted March 31, 2007 Share #2 Posted March 31, 2007 OK the backorder situation seems behind us ..if you want a new M8 you can find one . First question is, IS the Leica warranty transferable, IE does it follow the camera? I don't know the answer to that question. Second question is, What is the difference in price between a used M8 and a new M8? Third question is, If it's a refurb/rebuilt by Leica and sold by a authorized dealer does it come with a normal warranty (as in the same as a new camera, 2 years) or some type of abbreviated term warranty and does it also come with the free filter deal. I would consider buying a used M8 if the time left on the original warranty followed the camera, or in the case of a refurb/rebuilt from a dealer it had a full warranty, and it was considerable less cost. Say $800-$1000 less then a new one. Maybe $400-$600 less for a refurb/rebuilt unit with full 2 year warranty and filter deal. If the warranty is only good for the original owner, IE non transferable (No warranty), or in the case of a refurb/rebuilt unit and came with a abbreviated warranty, then it would need to be $2000 or more off the price of a new one and even then I still might buy a new one just to have the warranty. This is the thing that scares me the most about all digital cameras. What happens in 2 years and 2 months from my purchase date and the camera fails. With film cameras you could take it to many different repair places and get it fixed. With these computer cameras that is not always possible and even if the manufacture will fix it, it might not be worth the cost compared to a new model. ibogost Posted March 31, 2007 Share #3 Posted March 31, 2007 My understanding is that the Leica warranty is not transferrable. Used M8s on Ebay are not exactly frequently listed, but it seems they go for around $4k. So, basically $800 under retail. Seems silly to forego the warranty for that small price premium. stunsworth Posted March 31, 2007 Share #4 Posted March 31, 2007 It may depend where you live. My passport explicitly says that it remains valid after a change of ownership
robsteve Posted March 31, 2007 Share #5 Posted March 31, 2007 In North America at least, if you can produce the original bill of sale, the warranty will cover new owners. It there is no original bill of sale, but the previous owner registered it with Leica and you know his name, Leica will look it up and honor the warranty. I ran into these issues a while back when a bought a bunch of Leica gear including some R8. As for the Passport, in North America, the M8 is not covered. On covered items, it is not transferrable, but the normal warrany does transfer.

glenerrolrd Posted March 31, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted March 31, 2007 I watch eBay like the stock market .daily ...used M8 s have dropped to around $4000. About $800 off street price. I will send Leica an email to confirm the warranty... I see the difference between the Passport (not provided on the M8 and not transferrable )and the warranty ..2years from the purchase..invoice, registration. I thought this was a relevant question beacause I am considering a 2nd body...OK ..I know I will be getting one ..and normally I would wait until Leica either provides an upgraded model or at least settles down from the launch . Would you buy a used(mint) M8 with warranty remaining for $4000?

Try Collectible Camera, a sponsor on this site. Explain to them that you might buy a used one at 4K and see what the best they can do on a new one. I bought my M8 there and the accesories like the batteries were a bit cheaper too. In answer to your question, at $4,000, I would not buy a used M8.
