Thick paper selection

The last time I made a print, which was quite a while ago I admit, and with the very kind help of a forum member here who provided me with some tweaked paper profiles as my prints were too dark, I achieved almost perfect results. Today I tried making sure my prints were still ok before setting about printing my main pics. I tried printing the image that I last used to judge the accuracy. I used all the same settings, as I had noted them down on the back of the photo for just this occasion. I say all the same settings, but there is one that I just cannot find now, "thick paper selected" I have it written on the back of my photo so I must have used this, but I cannot for the life of me find it again. Something tells me that this was a "eureka" moment last time and after using this setting prints were much more as they looked on-screen apart from the dark appearance which was fettled with the modded paper profiles. I have looked in the printer utlity and the actual print setting dialogue but I can't find this thick paper tickbox or whatever it was now. I am using LR3 on an iMac and the printer is an Epson R1800. I have a feeling that I am missing part of the printer utility, the only part I can find is for ink levels and nozzle cleaning etc. I have carried out a few nozzle cleans and the monitor is profiled, but there was a pleasing tone to my sunset sky in the "test" image that is now no longer there when I print it. Can anyone let me know where I can find this thick paper selection, as I say it is the only variation from my last settings.

Many thanks

The paper thickness and platen gap can be adjusted using the paper configuration settings either within LR or by using the printer menu. Read your manual.

And nothing to do with your question, but I highly recommend LR4....just because it's better.

I have found the place where I could select thick paper. If I set the print module to let the printer manage colour, another Epson box pops up and that is what I was using. Then going back and have LR manage the colour. I will try a print tomorrow in the daylight. I would upgrade to LR4 but unfortunately I don't think it will run on my machine now as I only have OSX 10.6.8 on an Intel core duo. I tried the demo of LR4 but it would not work.

The usual workflow is to to get your image how you want it in whatever image editing program you're using (Lightroom, Aperture, Photoshop, etc.). Once done there, when you hit "print" it should bring up your print driver. It's within that that you can set paper width and platen gap. Setting a wider width or larger gap is typically used for heavy-weight papers. That will often help with paper feed issues, pizza wheel marks, and the like. Unfortunately, it won't affect actual print quality.

Good luck with rediscovering your original settings...
