This could seem strange to mount such a beast of a lens on the new Leica M, but results are amazing and better compared to a Canon camera. Only problem is that you have no IS and no AF, and it becomes a challenge to focus right and not shake. But for landscape photography this is absolutely OK. You actually profit a lot from Leica sensor with no antialiasing filter. New long lens photo quality level is now reachable for landscape photographers. I don't think you profit "a lot" from the loss of an AA filter. I have a D800E and suspect the difference is very minute. I'd hazard to say that the price of the adapter would be better put to use toward even an entry level full frame DSLR to get proper use of that lens. There is the novelty factor though...and that's probably about it.

Why put an entry level body on such a beautiful lens? This would be such a waste! and the adapter costs only 90$. Something is true now, has always been and will always be: image quality is proportional to the price you pay on your gear (as long as you know perfectly how to use it and get the maximum performance from it).

The modern Canon telephotos are wonderful alternatives to the very expensive (and less common) Leica R Apo tele options, but without a manual control of aperture on a Leica M they are far from versatile (being forced to shoot wide open, or using a DSLR to close them down). Interesting test nonetheless.

I'm afraid that, as the M and various adapters become more widely available, this forum will turn into a test bench for every single DSLR lens out there, old and new.

How long until "The Nikkor 1200-1700/5.6-8 and Sigma 200-500/2.8 really rock on the M!"? (Ex-forum member) Washington's contraptions would pale in comparison.

Perhaps this would indeed deserve a sub-forum - or at least some kind of dedicated thread in the lens forum.

Apologies for the late evening rant...

And I will add that there is actually no lens on the market today that compete with Canon 300mm f2.8 IS II at full aperture f2.8 ! I must say that I mostly use this lens full open as it is where it is the best.

Maybe someday we will see an adapter that includes an aperture ring to manually select aperture. This will require some power in it, as there is no electric connection with M body. IS would be nice too. It is possible because it already exists for Sony NEX camera and works well.

I said entry level full frame camera. If you chose Nikon FF camera you'd have a sensor on par with the Leica to boot. Really you are just using these long teles on a system that is not well suited to their full potential. If you have the 300mm f/2.8 it deserves a full frame DSLR to go with it. I have a Nikon 200mm f/2 and it's the reason I'm keeping my Nikon D800E. I wouldn't think of getting rid of the Nikon and trying to use it on a new M.

Why get rid of a camera for another. I keep Canon EOS 1D MkIV for sport shooting and every situation where AF is key. But I also do a lot of landscape photography where AF does not count nor IS. Goal is to get the best picture quality, and Leica M sensor definitely gives this very special tonal balance and color signature that is out of reach of any Canon or Nikon camera.

I like my Leicas because of the lenses and rangefinder. Not sure if I believe there is some sort of magic in the sensor but glad it's working for you! :)
