Â It was discontinued about the time they went to the one-piece rear caps, which were deeper than the previous model. And the back-to-back ring that they made at the time probably wouldn't have acommodated the later lenses because it was not only shallower but also open. doubice Posted March 30, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted March 30, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) The part number of the M lens coupling ring is 14838 and I would not be surprised if it was still available from Leica. It is a great accessory and as other posters, I have also copied it for my Canon and Nikon lenses when I used the systems. Â It is quite simple to make. As Ron mentions - glue two caps back to back; I have been using two-part epoxy, as I found it held better than super glue. For added safety I drilled the bottoms of the glued-together caps and joined them with a couple of 2mm flat head machine screws and nuts with washers. Never had them come apart. Â It is important though to make sure that the lens caps hold the lenses tightly, otherwise you might end up with a lens on the ground..... There are quite few eBay sellers offering aftermarket rear M caps quite cheaply; it should not be too expensive to fabricate a few lens holders this way. That would make me nervous. But one of Leica's subcontractors could easily do it. Â While I am at it, I repeat my 'praterea censeo Carthaginem esse delendam' backwards: For the rest I think that somebody should make a modern version of the old Benser baseplate, with bayonets for two lenses (actually, you used only one, but the second one gave you a place to keep the lens you just removed). It would be an even better idea now for the M8, as we can remove the baseplate without fogging any film! Many photojournalists with a minimalist mindset liked the contraption, but it was never made for cameras from the M4 on.
