Torquinian Posted April 7, 2013 Share #21 Posted April 7, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, I'm starting to shoot a bit of colour of late and my local shops only sell the consumer rubbish, I'm wondering if anyone could recommend any decent film? I'm basically shooting "things around me" which could include people, abstracts, nature etc. so essentially general use film. I bought a roll of Portra 160 which I thought I'd try out (yet to run it through my camera though) but looking for other suggestions. Cheers! I like Kodak Ektar 100 myself. You can get it at a reasonable price from 7dayshop by post.
Advertisement Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 Hi Torquinian, Take a look here Recommended colour negative film?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
thrid Posted April 9, 2013 Share #22 Posted April 9, 2013 Another vote for Kodak Portra. Beautiful colors, massive exposure range, fine grain. Great stuff; really hard to beat. Too bad Kodachrome is gone. That one still hurts.
McGirton Posted April 9, 2013 Share #23 Posted April 9, 2013 Voting for Kodak Porta as well.
sblitz Posted April 9, 2013 Share #24 Posted April 9, 2013 Ektar is great when yogurt it just right, portra better for mere mortals
sblitz Posted April 9, 2013 Share #25 Posted April 9, 2013 Not yogurt. When you get it just right
erl Posted April 9, 2013 Share #26 Posted April 9, 2013 Just bought a roll of Ektar 100 from B&H (arriving today with my bulk rolls of Delta 100 & 400) to try, again. Did not order any yoghurt. Last time I tried it the colours alarmed me. Prepared to try again, but I really am very satisfied with Kodak Portra and Fuji 400H.
Graf Lomo Posted April 14, 2013 Share #27 Posted April 14, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Portra 400 Rossmann 400 (local Drugstore - I think it is the Superia 400) Paradies 200 (another local Drugstore - I think is a Kodak) Portra 160 I miss a nice 100 ISO Film. I don't like Ektars Colors.
Torquinian Posted April 16, 2013 Share #28 Posted April 16, 2013 Another vote for Kodak Portra. Beautiful colors, massive exposure range, fine grain. Great stuff; really hard to beat. Too bad Kodachrome is gone. That one still hurts. Yes I used Kodachrome 25 for years, then 64. Excellent film .In those days most colour negative film was poor. StS Posted April 17, 2013 Share #29 Posted April 17, 2013 I never tried Ektar 100 (Portra 160 does the job for me) but get the impression from the comments here it could be a film for the psychedelic moments. Stefan
erl Posted April 17, 2013 Share #30 Posted April 17, 2013 I think you are exactly right Stefan!
SteveYork Posted April 20, 2013 Share #31 Posted April 20, 2013 I don't want to sound snotty, but the right light will make any color film look good. I've always enjoyed the inexpensive Kodak Gold 100. Too bad Kodak recently discontinued.
erl Posted April 21, 2013 Share #32 Posted April 21, 2013 Steve, you partly correct. You must however acknowledge that all films have there own character and some therefore perform better in certain environments than others. By saying "the right light will make any film look good" of course is sort of right, but must be coupled with "the right film". Eg. When shooting stage work, I always used to use FujiPress 800. That was a saturated film that worked well understage lights with often strong gels. Terrible for portraits I found. Whereas the Portras are great for skin tones and general shooting. I am about to test roll of the current iteration of Kodak Ektar 100. I am not optomistic about its versatility.
sblitz Posted April 22, 2013 Share #33 Posted April 22, 2013 Post what you think. I have some strong opinions on ektar and portra and am interested in what you find
erl Posted April 22, 2013 Share #34 Posted April 22, 2013 Shall do Steve. It may be a while yet but I bought the film specifically to try. The weather here is turning wintry and I feel the Ektar may be a 'fine weather film'. I may prove myself wrong of course!
michaelwj Posted April 22, 2013 Share #35 Posted April 22, 2013 Another Portra 400 vote. I used to love Fuji Superia 400 but that is not easy to find anymore, even at the good film stockists. In Sydney, try the following; Foto Reisel, Kent St Ted's Camera, Pitt St Vision Imagelab, George St, Redfern I'm in Melbourne, you can get most stuff from Vanbar, but usually I go to Purchase Films Online > B&W Photographics they have an okay range at reasonable prices, and a discount on processing makes it not too bad. They have Superia 400 all the time at both B&W and Vanbar, Porta too. Michael
erl Posted April 22, 2013 Share #36 Posted April 22, 2013 Vanbar in Melbourne have a great range of many things. Regrettably it seems anywhere in this country, film costs are ridiculous. Much as I definitely prefer to use local traders, I can buy all my films from B&H in NY (USA) for half the local cost here, even after paying shipping, which takes about 5 business days. ie Mon to Mon. michaelwj Posted April 23, 2013 Share #37 Posted April 23, 2013 They do make it hard to shop locally. I try to buy when I'm away with work, Japan or US, picked up some Provia400x for about A$8 /36exp. Black and White Photographics in Adelaide are the only affordable(ish) option in Australia I've found. Still need to go into Vanbar for chemicals etc. though. erl Posted April 23, 2013 Share #38 Posted April 23, 2013 Yep! Still get my chems from Vanbar.
