glenerrolrd Posted March 29, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted March 29, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) After reading all the posts and struggling with focus accuracy, I decided to take the plunge and adjust my M8 s finder. Using the 2MM allen wrench ..a 1/12 turn to the right(looking into the camera) seemed to adjust infinity. When I focus my 50mm summicron on the moon...it comes into perfect registration at full stop. Am I right to assume that this lens isn t supposed to focus past infinity? I also tried a roof top about 1/2 mile away ..seemed perfect. Then I tried the close focus test using Tim Jackson s Chart ..the 45 degree about 3 feet away ...the system was now badly backfocusing ...a good 2 inches (50CM) back of the focus point. So I adjusted the Cam to the left about the same 1/12 ..maybe a little more ...sort of almost where it was to start. Close focus seems good ..but it seems to focus past infinity. Is this a compromise setting ... I thought you were supposed to get infinity right first and then fine tune with the close focus test. Could use some help. carstenw Posted March 29, 2007 Share #2  Posted March 29, 2007 That little wheel cannot tune in both infinity and near focus, if the balance between them isn't right. I had the same problem. I ended up jumping in with both feet and tuning all three aspects myself:  http://www.leica-camera-user.com/digital-forum/20134-leica-red-dot.html  Perhaps if you want to try your hand at this, it would be useful to post in that thread. Otherwise, you could send your camera back to be adjusted, but the wait is what eventually deterred me.
glenerrolrd Posted March 29, 2007 Author Share #3 Â Posted March 29, 2007 Carsten thanks for you quick reply ..I have been reading all your threads on this . just to set me straight..(1) when checking the infinity setting .....should the patch come into registration when the lens is at full stop...my lenses seem to go slightly beyond this point..is that normal when you get it right? (2) when I read the threads on just using the allen wrench adjustment ...people recommend that you adjust it at close focus , intermediate focus and infinity..does this imply a compromise setting ..assuming you are limited to only the Cam adjustment? (3) how do you test your work......a printed page is easy for close focus , books on a shelf for intermediate ....how do you test infinity? Thanks Roger
carstenw Posted March 30, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted March 30, 2007 With a reasonably long lens, I have mine set to contact the stop at visual infinity, yes. Â I don't know what people recommend about tuning the same wheel for first one thing, then another, but this can't work. All you could accomplish that way is a compromise. I would set it correctly at infinity, and then see how bad the situation is, and how keen you are to either send the camera back for tuning (count on 6 weeks or more, unless you can convince Leica to do it faster), or attack it yourself. If you don't want to do either for now, then you must choose your best compromise. Â I tested infinity at night by focusing on a star. It is really easy to see when it is out, both horizontally and vertically. Focusing on a smoke stack several kilometres away with the 35/2 Asph still does not reach infinity! glenerrolrd Posted March 30, 2007 Author Share #5 Â Posted March 30, 2007 Carsten Thanks for your response. Well .I guess I will have to appeal to Leica ..I am going on their Leica/Porsche trip in mid June ..about 10 weeks . I sure want this to be working then . I will have to go thru all the threads again...the verticle adjustment looks fine and after adjustment ..I can nail the close focus..but infinity is off . One more day and I guess it goes in somewhere. Thanks again
