maxspbr Posted March 29, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted March 29, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all. Â Â Anyone here still make all the baths in the old way, with separate elements (hidroquinone, metol, sulphide, etc) and mixing to make a bath? Â If so, anyone here still uses DK-20 and other old-fashioned developers? Â Here in Brazil certain products are getting very very scarce (like metol), others nobody ever knows, like pyrogalic acid; are these ocorring in other places? Advertisement Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 Hi maxspbr, Take a look here b/w developing - formulary. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Dan States Posted March 30, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted March 30, 2007 Martin, sadly I think most of the people using Leica's these days have their photos printed at a drug store....The people still deep into the craft developing seem to be mostly in the large format world now. Â Â Here in the US there is a great place called Photographers Formulary that still offers both raw chemicals and many of the classic formulations. Â I've bought Pyro from them and some other stuff when I was in my experimentation phase. Â I've since come to feel that sticking with just good old D76 is all I'll ever really understand. Â This is a great link: http://www.photoformulary.com/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabindex=2&tabid=
rob_x2004 Posted March 30, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted March 30, 2007 Sao Paulo would have to be digital fashion model city wouldnt it? I have an journal of photography with recipies I could check through if you think there might be an alternative concoction that might work.
haris Posted March 30, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted March 30, 2007 Huh, if you can't make arrangment with Photoformulary, I would go to pharmacy store or other store which works with chemicals. For example in my town here is small private firm which make cosmetics, solution for laboratories and like. You can go to them and through them to buy raw chemicals or ask them to make you developer by recepy you give them. But, that kind of work is usually very expencive. Â Try APUG forum. Since that is forum for analog photography, lots of members there make theire chemistry from raw chemicals, or modify already known formulae. So, you can get lots of advices there and some formulae too.
maxspbr Posted March 31, 2007 Author Share #5  Posted March 31, 2007 Thanks a lot for your answers!  I think that Photo Formulary will be the best way. I'll contact them and ask about what I can bring to Brazil.  Unhappy São Paulo is too deep into digital moods; we had a street in downtown just with protographic stores; almost all are now closed. And with low demand, nobody sells metol, etc. Acetic Acid and Hypo are the exceptions.  Anyway, thanks again, helped me a lot!  Martin
artur5 Posted March 31, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted March 31, 2007 I used to mix my own chemical. B/W and color too : E6, C41, EP2 ( old color paper process). I was able to find locally all the raw products needed except the color developing agent -the infamous CD4-. No way . So, I ended using the solution from the bottle C of Kodak's C41 developer. It contains concentrate CD4 protected with metabisulfide to avoid oxidation. Raw chemicals for color photo are troublesome to get from abroad. There a lot of regulations concerning the transport and distribution of hazardous materials. Several of those raw chemicals are almost impossible to get if you are an individual buying small quantities from another country. Unless you are in the USA. ( Photo formulary ) or Italy ( Chimifoto Ornano ). If you look on Photographer's formulary web, you'll find that they don't ship abroad ( not even to Canada) some products. ( hydroquinone, potassium hidroxide, CD4 and many others.)
