The M9 is to the M240 as Jpeg is to Raw?

Same image ------ Aperture, Capture One and LR4 .... not fiddled with ... base settings

I exposed this for the flower ... to see what sort of detail there was in dull conditions - last is a 100% crop....

and just to make it more complex the uploaded JPG's don't look the same as the originals on my computer...

and then there is the variance depending on your monitor......

and possibly the colour space is not identical (hard to be sure)

and not every M9 image has a typical M9 'look' anyway ......

and so it goes on.......

you will either have to take the reassurance of those that have one at face value or wait until enough 'Leica IQ' images appear to convince you.....

Sadly, after the video reviews started appearing, I canceled my order for the M. For me, the video is what made the new M worth the expenditure. Unfortunately, the problems with moire and rolling shutter seen in even the simple videos that have come out make the M unsuitable for my purposes.

Actually, I had two problems. The first was the video quality, the second is that I naively thought I'd have one in my hands in time for several upcoming projects, one being next week. I grabbed an eBay M9 yesterday, which should be arriving this afternoon.

I was really excited about the live view for macro and tele, but I guess the NEX-6 will have to continue to tide me over on that for a while.

I think you get to a point where only shooting with it can tell you.

Canon G9 or Powershot Whateverthelatest is vs 1DX, I can decide on feature list and online samples which one will suit my requirements.

M9 vs M240. MM vs M9 B&W converted. X100s vs Panasonic GH3 (?) ..... well, you need to shoot with it I think.

When the specs are so close, only your connection to and comfort with the camera as a whole system will matter in the end.

I stopped shooting with the M9 for a month because the damn shutter recock noise was just p1ssing me off! They're tactile tools that we have close to us for hours on end, under pressure or relaxed, warm cold, wet dry, light gloomy - you can't judge that online.

I've put a Leica 24 mm lens on my Nex 6 and the results using focus peaking are quite impressive. Now all that needs to hapen is for my M to arrive and I'll have two camera systems with the Nex as a backup with a 50 mm Leica lens.

Wow. If the video is so important to you, why were you even considering the M in the first place? There are several great DSLRs available with robust and much-evolved video capabilities for a lot less money. Canon 5DMK3, for instance. Why would you pay twice as much for a camera that is primarily a rangefinder stills camera that just happens to be instituting a basic video feature for the first time?

It seems like every other poster criticizing the M on this forum wants the camera to be a holy grail jack-of-all-trades. One person wants it to be a professional cinema camera, while the next wants it to be a medium format studio camera. All in a compact, simple to use, and inexpensive rangefinder body. Oh, and they want it yesterday.

I think you guys are forgetting what the M camera actually is and has always been.

I already have the video covered with a Nikon at the moment, I was just looking for an excuse to justify the purchase and only carry one camera. Obviously if I was doing the "smart" thing I'd liquidate all my Leica lenses and stick with my Nikon system. I just like shooting with Leica.

I think your last sentence is ample reason to justify the purchase, and to carry two cameras. That Nikon can serve for the video needs and for when you must have AF. The M will serve for when you just want to enjoy that rangefinder magic. But of course the M9 will also serve valiantly in that role.

Similarly, I like the look of the M9's output (as you may be fond of film), and the M240's output departs from that look and becomes more a kindred spirit of the other major brands than to it's predecessor, the M9. I have mixed feelings about that development that I'm struggling with.

In any event, thanks for your input.

I agree with your observations. However, don't lose our trust in Leica.

Just wait for a while, it is very likely that Leica will come up with version-up firmware that gives you better OOC DNG and JPEG image rendering.

Excellent points!

Besides the postprocessing tools you mentioned above, I found that Silkpix 3.0 extracts more details than Capture One 4.0 does based on only few case.

Graphic card in the computer also matters.

Thanks and Regards,
