Sandisk Extreme 128GB 45MB/s

- Yes I know it is overkill but I really wanted to know if the M supported the newer cards since my old M9 capped out at 32GB. Has that changed?

Version 1.1.0.2 firmware

- Came installed

Formatted SD card in camera

From startup, I will hold down the shutter button

- 1.5 seconds

What I am still searching for is the 0.5 second wake (with no LV) but my cards are nowhere near this speed. However things are definitely faster after formatting with SDFormater

Live View (or Advanced Metering) definitely slow down start up.

Understand Chris, and I have both of those things turned off, but I'm still nowhere near 0.5 seconds. The fastest time I've been able to "wake" the camera is 2.5 seconds, which when something is happening in front of you is an eternity.

For now I just have to keep the camera from going to sleep, but this is not an ideal solution. Oh well, all part of being a beta tester ;)

That seems to be about the only answer for now which makes having an extra battery or two even more important than last week.

I am not going to download some formatter as my continuous is pretty good at around 12-14 shots and to me that could be more important than wakeup if I decide just to leave it on all the time. I will breath easier once I get a backup battery.

So the older Sandisk 30MB/sec SD cards that I have PLENTY of seem to be OK as they can write up to 14 shots from the buffer. For a few seconds I do not feel like getting another 10 SD cards just because I have the M. Is this thinking good or bad. I know horses for courses.

0.5 secs was an estimate ..... and wishfull thinking ......my measured speeds are about half a second quicker than full off..... but still much quicker than 2.5 secs.

I suppose all that matters is you can take a photo by the time you have got the camera to your eye .... so 1-2 seconds should be fine whatever you use.

Battery drains at approx 5% per hour if left on continuously.

It looks like you are fine with your old cards for now.

I would wait with buying lots of new cards until a clear card winner has emerged.

Getting the formatter and taking the risk of formatting one card and see what happens is probably worth doing.

Good luck.

Hi Stephen

If this is the worst gotcha that the M can throw up, then waiting for a fix by turning off auto sleep at important times isn't so bad. Not to suggest for a second that it isn't important. Threads like this are really useful for everyone (including Leica I suspect).

Obviously it needs fixing, but it seems likely that it will at least be greatly improved.

Great question.

I am wondering whether this formatter also makes a difference for the M9, M9-P, MM, M-E?

Formatter increased speed of my cards in the M9, faster than PC format (maybe .5 sec), and much faster (several seconds) than M9 (overwrite) using the 7 frames, 1/4000, uncompressed method. Thank you Pico!

I absolutely agree Jono that this is a minor issue which for now can be worked around, and I am sure Leica will come up with a solution shortly.

Cheers,

For what it’s worth, I am getting startup times from 1.85 to 2.00 seconds with a freshly formatted SanDisk Extreme Pro 95 MB/s. Classic metering, no live view. A quick re-format with the SDFormatter didn’t make a difference.

Wake from sleep time appears to be the same. And yes, that Extreme Pro is the fastest card I have come across in recent times, but then I haven’t done any exhaustive tests.

I find this very hard to believe ....

I have tried both Eye-Fi 16gb and Sandisk Extreme 16gb (both class 10)

From full off < 1sec

From standby < 0.5 secs

If fact unless I pre-focus I could not focus fast enough to take a photo before the shutter is usable.

Which Firmware are you using ....... ????

I never upgraded to the latest.......

.... tinkering with software/firmware often de-optimises the coding....

This is still our speed leader, and that 0.5 sec wake from sleep mode seems to be harder to find than the Easter Bunny. Knocking two seconds off the wake time would be a huge benefit to me, so I am hoping we can figure out if it is as simple as using these specific cards, or possibly something with the latest firmware upgrade.

Well, sort off yes.

Hi Michael

I'm also using SanDisk Extreme Pro 95s 32Gb and I'm not getting better than 4 seconds. formatting made no difference. this is on 2 bodies. confusing! I'm using compressed DNG +fine jpg (for ipad use on the current trip).

What could be making the difference?

What could be making the difference [/Quote]

So far everyone has made comparisons of various read/write speeds as if the cards were the cause. That might be one factor. Let me interject that the issue might be the hardware-software of the M240 that makes a difference. We do not know how Leica may have changed such. It is invisible to us.

That is only one factor.

The other is how we choose and then treat SD* cards. So many variables.

Hi Jono,

I would try Classic metering, no live view and then these cases:

DNG compressed

DNG compressed + fine jpg

DNG uncompressed

DNG uncompressed + fine jpg

If these parameter changes aren't successful I would play with others having to do with initialization and processing.

Card size may have an effect as well.

Also, whether the card is empty or partially filled.

As a beta tester I would also ask Leica about this issue.

Are there hardware differences between different production Ms?

Good luck.

hI There

Of Course - I've tried these things, and it makes no obvious difference - but I've tried using a proper timer, and the timings are coming out at around 3.5 seconds.

Freshly formatted cards with no images in all cases, file type appears to make no difference. Of course I've also talked to Leica about this.

The answer to your last question is that I don't know either!

Hi Jono,

Many thanks.

Startup or waking up was one issue.

The other was, how many images can be shot before the M slows down.

There these parameters might make a difference. They certainly did on the M9.
