Rheingold Posted March 15, 2013 Share #1 Posted March 15, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) New member here - quite possibly one of the newest AND likely the oldest! Yesterday I took delivery of a minty-mint M8, and a near new 28mm 2.8 ASPH 'Summarit' and I'm like a dog with two tails. My last Leica (an M2 + 50mm collapsible 'Summicron') goes way back (40 years?) to the days of Adox KB14 film and 'Hyfin' developer (sigh) so buying this M8 is, for me, nostalgia personified, and I can't wait to get back to the world of manual focus! I have a really good Nikon outfit based on the D800, but somehow it already feels, kinda, you know, almost surplus to requirements. Greetings to all from the wilds of Hampshire, England. (great looking forum by the way: many congrats) Pete.

Jeff S Posted March 15, 2013 Share #2 Posted March 15, 2013 Welcome. Don't know about the 'old' part; lots of geezers around these parts.Congrats on the new toys...err, tools. Once you've hung around the forum(s), hope you don't fall into the trap of thinking that you need a different M model to take better pics; the M8 is a very capable machine. Otherwise, GAS (gear acquisition syndrome, in case you wonder) may ensue. Hope, too, that you print your pics to realize how good the M8 can be. I used film M's for decades, but switched to digital (M8.2) 4 years ago and don't miss the darkroom drudgery. Jeff
mike_j Posted March 15, 2013 Share #3 Posted March 15, 2013 Welcome, I hope you get a lot of fun and use out of your new camera. I'm not going to challenge anyone to an age comparison but I did buy my first Leica for my 21st birthday (no-one else would). It was 20 years older than me.I still have it, and it still works fine, though it only gets used rarely when I need the 15mm Heliar for ultra wide. 1933 black Leica lll with f2 Summar lens. You can do the maths! Best thing I ever did with Leica though was to swap my M6 for an M8 (plus an excessive amount of money). It has given me so much more pleasure from photography and I love doing a bit of IR sometimes.

jip Posted March 20, 2013 Share #7 Posted March 20, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Welcome! I'm probably the youngest on the forum, with only (as of march 17th) 20 years on the counter. At least I'm not a teen anymore ass of last week. Haha! Nice having you!
Rheingold Posted March 20, 2013 Author Share #8 Posted March 20, 2013 Thanks, Jip, for the warm welcome! In spite of your youth, you seem to have accumulated a terrific array of fine equipment. (I hope that didn't come across as patronising - it sure wasn't meant.) Cheers....
Rheingold Posted March 20, 2013 Author Share #9 Posted March 20, 2013 Pete, welcome to the forum. As to the extract from your posting, if true, you have a very rare lens. Never heard of it. David, the 28mm 2.8 ASPH Summarit's not rare, surely? This one dates to around 2006/7, and is the latest model, I believe. In any case it's pretty damn good and do you know, I haven't used my Nikon D800 since taking delivery of the M8! Pete
