Four days, 704 images in New England with M8

I've just returned from a short four-day family trip to visit a photographer friend in Connecticut. I took the M8 and three lenses (50 Lux, 28 Cron, WATE), plus a thinkTank full of Canons; 1DsMkII, IR-converted 5D, six or seven L lenses. I also threw in the Canon 550 point and shoot.

We visited downtown Boston, the seaport city of Mystic, CT (think mystic Pizza with Julia Roberts), Stockbridge, MA in the Berkshire Mts. (home of the Norman Rockwell museum and Alice's restaurant), and the Yale University campus in New Haven, CT.

The Canons never saw the light of day. The M8 kit fit perfectly in the A&A Penn's Pad & Pencil Satchel (I like the zipper rather than the flap). In the four days I made over 700 images (all RAW) and the camera performed flawlessly. The battery was only changed once, and I still had 2/3 of a charge left on the second battery. I have IR filters on the Cron and the Lux but not the WATE. I only noticed the IR problem on one indoor shot with the WATE. I changed lenses dozens of times, mostly outdoors, and saw no dust on the sensors (I did turn the camera off as suggested during lens changes). I did not use my ExpoDisk at all, but rather relied on the preset WB settings. Only minor adjustments were needed in C1.

I'm going on another trip in April to Santa Fe and will probably leave the Canons at home.

The shot below was made in Faneuil Hall in Boston. An assortment of images from the trip can be viewed at

Great pics! Looks like you had a lot of fun too. The M8 seems to compliment your shooting style. You certainly have a good eye for pictures. Which lenses did you use most and when ( I assume the WATE outdoors and cron/lux inside).

Thanks, carcam, I actually used the WATE a lot indoors. With ISO 640 and 1250, there was never a real problem with light, especially because 1) it can be focused and 2) it can be used wide open without compromise. Plus, I can get several additional shutter speeds simply because there is no DSLR mirror slap. Many of the images in the slide show were done at 1/30 and slower. It's really a great lens.

Of the 48 photos published in this gallery, 15 were taken with the 50mm, 20 with the 28mm and 13 with the WATE. I would not have guessed that percentage, but I did use each lens often, and don't regret having any of them. I have a 75mm Cron on order with Sean at Camera West that should round out the toolkit. Anything more defeats the purpose of the Leica footprint, right, Guy? ;-)

BTW, I use the 21-28 Leica finder, not the Frankenfinder. It's far less intimidating and works very well, though the spirit level on the FF would be nice.

I am still trying to assemble the ideal lens assortment and I think I may need the WATE. Although I must admit, after Guy's suggestion, I picked up the VT 15 and I love it. It's so small, light and inexpensive. I'm not even using a viewfinder and I'm very impressed with it. Thanks for posting the pictures.
