I think if you stay in touch with several dealers, and if you know a Leica rep, and, if you keep close to this forum, I'd be surprised if you didn't come up with the Elmarit within 6-8 weeks.  I was lucky and got one around Christmas, and it is a wonderful lens. Unless you need the extra stop, I'd forego the Cron and wait for the Elmarit.

It's only drawback compared to the Elmarit is size. I would think carefully about this because for many of us the 28mm focal length is becoming the standard for the M8 with its 1.33 crop. Having f2 on a standard lens is a real plus IMO  Woody
AaronJ Posted March 28, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted March 28, 2007 My 28 'Cron is amazingly sharp on the M8 -- so much so I find myself taking pictures of stupid crap just so I can blow it up to 100% and show off all the detail to my wife who, as you might imagine, doesn't care. Regardless, really, I can't say anything about the Elamar because I have not used it but the 'cron is one special bit of kit.
pemayeux Posted March 28, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted March 28, 2007 I've got the Elmarit and while it is a very nice lens and is very sharp, to me it is a bit contrasty. The size is nice but I'm thinking I'm going to sell mine and go for the 'cron. I haven't had the need for the extra stop, but it wouldn't hurt to have it. John Maio Posted March 28, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted March 28, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've been waiting for one forever (well it seems that long). I wonder if its just that hard to manufacture or perhaps there's a profit margin reason to explain why more are not available
monkeysixtysix Posted March 28, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted March 28, 2007 Funny story... Â I have been trying to track down this lens for quite a while now. Yesterday I went to ebay for the hell of it and much to my surprise someone is selling a "mint" 28mm Elmarit: Â eBay: Leica 28 f/2.8 Elmarit M ASPH 28mm f2.8 6-bit MINTY (item 140100633395 end time Mar-29-07 18:03:52 PDT) Â So as I was sitting at my desk debating whether or not to place a bid, a dealer calls and says that she has just received a new 28 Elmarit and that I am next on the waiting list! Can't tell you how many places I have looked at online or called, and all of a sudden within a ten minute span I stumble upon 2 lenses! Absurd... bingaloid Posted March 28, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted March 28, 2007 Is it possible for someone who has both to post some kind of reference image, or could a couple of owners of each post images? Â I've decided to buy a 28 but haven't figured out which to get, the cron or the elmarit, and I'd like to see the contrast difference if it's possible. Â Thanks in advance. bingaloid Posted March 29, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted March 29, 2007 I am wondering if anyone can tell me if I'm right or wrong on this: I'm under the impression that the 28mm Elmarit is somehow optimized for digital in it's design and the Summicron, while remaining an excellent lens, is really designed for film. Â Can that be? Can someone tell me of any differences they can see between the two lenses in terms of highlight/shadow detail and overall clarity when used with an M8? Has anyone used the Elmarit 28 on a film camera and compared it to the Summicron 28? Â Thanks, David

ibogost Posted March 30, 2007 Share #13 Â Posted March 30, 2007 Wow, that Elmarit on Ebay went for $1,777. A full $250 or 17% premium over the new retail price. That's what scarcity will do...
rcarnes Posted March 30, 2007 Share #14  Posted March 30, 2007 Harry's Pro Shop, Toronto  portal  Last time I checked with him (about a month ago), it took about two weeks, and they were quoting aroudn $1,700 CD, + shipping. I'm not current on the conversion to USD, but it's cheaper than the EBay quote referenced in the string.  Besides, this guy is a real human being with a very professional service.  Cheers,  Rob
