Hello,

I noticed these stripes of light on the right (or bottom) of the frame, when shooting with 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000 speeds. Has anyone come across this problem.

I bought my used M3 from PhotoSuffren in Paris in CLA'd condition and I never dropped it or damaged it in any way. It is still under the 6-month warranty, so I should sent it back (I live in Athens, Greece), shouldn't I?

What could be faulty here? I searched in the forum but couldn't find this specific problem of light leaking...

Similar problem to what I had on my M3 which I bought with warranty from Tamarkin (this and this threads). Ultimately I returned it and got my money back.

In your situation, I would doubt that the camera was serviced properly. Shutter speeds are checked (or should be) as part of a CLA. In any event, were I you, I would send it back and get another one, either from the same or other dealer.

Judging by the M2 repair manual (p22) light leaks could be caused by several things. Most require disassembly to some degree.

I bought my M3 new about 1960 (#984580). It was the single-stroke. It worked fine for a few years. Then I let it sit for a few years, and forgot to "excercise" the shutter. When I used it again, I got the same white streaks on one side. I was told it was "shutter bounce", due to drying or congealing of the original lube.

I brought it to Rudy Lingg in Culver City, CA. He used a newer lube that does not congeal. He was still there in 1991, but now it is run by Stephen Choi as Steve's Camera Service. 4355 S. Sepulveda Blvd., Culver City, CA 90230. 310-397-0072

Now I'm in Boise, Idaho, and use DAG (Don Goldberg) in Oregon, Wisconsin. He does excellent work, and also does 6-bit indexing. 2128 Vintage Drive, Oregon, WI 53575 608-835-3442

Keep excercising your older focal plane shutters, at least quarterly, so they stay fully lubricated and smooth!
