M lens service in Germany?

It depends on the kind of service you need and the lens in question. Any competent indy should be able to regrease the helicoids of an Elmar or a Summicron 50. I wouldn't worry too much. However, when it comes to actual repairs, especially on the more sophisticated lenses, I would only rely on Solms. Brace yourself for steep prices though. I was quoted something around 500 Euros for cleaning a Summaron 35...

Independent repair shops ... I have tested my luck with three different ones (all of them recommended here on a regular basis) and while they managed to get the job done in the end, the overall experience was rather underwhelming. Number one needed three attempts to get the shutter speeds correct on my M2. Number two "defaced" my mint condition 1960s chrome Elmarit 90 with a nice deep scratch across the barrel when his screw driver slipped off a screw. It now looks as if some idiot amateur repairer had been tinkering with the lens. Okay, shit happens, but I would have expected a word of excuse. Well, I have to admit that at least he got the re-lube job done properly. Number three serviced my M3 and it came back with the rangefinder completely out of whack at close focus. After these sobering experiences I am reluctant to recommend any of the indies.
