Sailor Ted Posted March 28, 2007 Share #21 Â Posted March 28, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) FWIW the strap on my M8 appears on the surface to be of the same construction as that of my M6; a strap that served me for 10 years, 20,000 exposures, and on all continents. The issue is the plastic retainer sleeve- this is of a different plastic material then the plastic collar that came with our M6's. You can determine this by how much easier the M8 plastic sleeves slides over the steel clasps (as compared to the older sleeves). The sleeves that came with our M6's were tenacious and difficult to slide over the metal clasps. By contrast, the sleeves that come with our M8's slide over much easier and in the case of my sample, broke completely. Â The incident occurred while street shooting. One minute the camera was on my shoulder and the next, it was on the concrete with horrific damage resulting. Some may want to pretend this is not an issue, or that since the straps appear to be the same as our old and excellent straps that have come with our M bodies for years- you are waiting for a disaster to happen. I am not certain how Leica will back this up, but the warrantee on the M8 is as different from what came with our M6s, as is the strap. M8 shooters be warned. Â Lastly, I am a staunch advocate of both Leica and the M8 having invested countless hours defending this camera from TROLLS and their attacks. I firmly believe this to be one of the finest digital tools for creating images available in the world today. It is a shame that such a simple and cheap part could result in such damage. It is now up to Leica to back their product and I am hopeful they will.

Guest sirvine Posted March 28, 2007 Share #22 Â Posted March 28, 2007 Half-case is also a good protection against dropping your camera. BTW, I don't think this is a warranty issue, but I could be proven wrong.
Sailor Ted Posted March 28, 2007 Share #23 Â Posted March 28, 2007 The provided Leica neck strap failed resulting in severe damage to my camera. If a failure of Leica's provided equipment is not covered what is?
jcbjr Posted March 28, 2007 Share #24 Â Posted March 28, 2007 The provided Leica neck strap failed resulting in severe damage to my camera. If a failure of Leica's provided equipment is not covered what is? Â i feel really badly that this happened. nobody at this forum likes to hear about accidents, thefts, equipment failures, etc.; however, i'm not sure how leica should feel responsible for what is potentially improper operation of their provided equipment. how are they to know whether the strap was properly attached, whether it was attached, or whether it even failed? how do they know that the camera wasn't just dropped, strap and all? i am also not suggesting that you would be dishonest, it's just that with the potential for human deceit, it's hard to imagine any company exposing themselves financially by being willing to take at face value such an explanation. if they covered it, anyone who dropped their camera would of course be tempted, especially given the $ value, to claim the same thing. with a passport warranty you'd be all set, but unfortunately m8 doesn't have that. i do wish you luck in your negotiation with them. Sailor Ted Posted March 28, 2007 Share #25 Â Posted March 28, 2007 Heads up- I just got off the phone with Roger Horn at Leica Camera Inc in NJ. It seems they will take care of this issue to my satisfaction- I will know more by Friday. This may be premature but I feel my faith in this fine company is well founded.
