Ultraviolet Sensitivity of M8

Much has been talked about M8's IR response (as a nuisance). Nothing was said about its UV response. No useful response could be obtained from Kodak (they did reply to one of my queries: Film Lives! ● View topic - Leica M8. UV friendly?)

On 23rd March (two days ago), JaapV was very kind to make some time for me check out one of his M8's for its UV response.

The very first shot with an Industar-26M (from the 1950s) and a Baader U 2" filter (Baader Planetarium alles für die Astronomie, vom Fernrohr über das Teleskop bis zur Kuppel) showed the impressive UV sensitivity of the M8's sensor.

The Baader U 2" filter transmits only between 310nm and 390nm, in the ultraviolet region. So whatever the M8 recorded was reflected UV images.

A few more false color UV captures can be seen here:

(all with Industar 5cm f/2.8 at f/2.8 and 1s exposure and a Baader U 2" filter)

What this implies for normal visible light photography is that old lenses with UV transmission will render low contrast images. The B+W UV/IR cut filter is not an efficient filter in cutting off UV completely (check out Baader site for a better UV/IR cut filter).

Most modern lenses (especially Leica) will have no problem as they have very little or no UV transmission.

Of course, those few photogs who are interested in UV photography, this is by far the most UV sensitive (compared to a Nikon D70 and an Epson R-D1s) camera that I have used! :)

Now, where can I find 4.500 Euros for an M8?

... your first link up there is broken, BTW.

Of all the strengths of the M8, it's interesting to know that you are justifying your potential purchase of an M8 based on its UV abilities. ;)

Well, Arthur, there is one other reason as well.:)

See:http://www.leica-camera-user.com/digital-forum/19914-relly-wide-really-works-m8.html

BTW, the attachment image was taken at ISO160 (it was underexposed by about 2 stops as it turned out)
