i measured the same thickness on my 49/489; haven't figured out how to extract the glass yet...no way to apply a spanner to the retainer ring.

by the way, what is the diff between the 486 and 489? both are listed as infrared, and the 489 I have is also an F-Pro.

i found a bit on the schneider website: both the 486 and 489 are IR cut filters, but the 486 is listed as "slimline" style and specifically mentions adressing extra sensor IR sensitivity (say that three times!)

not enough info to figure it out completely.

One is an absorbsion filter (489, it is cyan), the other is a refection filter (486, hot mirror). With the absorbsion filter there is a filter factor, the reflection has no filter factor.

Need to know if we screw in the filter from the back which would leave the underside of the filter facing out . Do we need to flip the glass around

John's new design looks like we maybe able to screw in the whole filter from the back. this is looking really good

probably just use the glass, guy. the 49 mm filter housing isn't large enough to thread the OD for the lens hood and conditions are tight around the opening to avoid vignetting. since I'm going through the trouble to program two machines for this, might as well go whole hog. still looking into things though.

I would tend to think the glass only would cause less vignetting issues and you can stay with a smaller size filter. John you do whatever seems the best you have the controls at your hands. Even for the end users getting the glass out of the filter adapter is not that hard. Also John if it does come down to the glass only and we can't use a retaining ring and have to go glue maybe we need to know what to recommend to the end users. Just thinking ahead here. I'm thrilled at this whole idea. this is just great stuff. Pretty soon i will you building a whole new hand grip. LOL

It doesn't seem to matter which way the filter is pointed. I mounted my 39mm upside down to the VC 15mm and the filtering of IR is the same.

Honestly, Guy, I am not sure that really matters much at all, unless you are really getting a lot of junk onto the filter that must be wiped off versus blown off. I have been looking at these new Leica filters alongside the B+W filters, and aside from the slightly different reflectivity that I mentioned in another thread, there is nothing visible to really tell whether there is a harder coating and to which side it may have been applied.

Good than seems like either way than it will be fine. I have yet to see a leica filter and I know i ordered a 60 and 39 but have no idea the other two and even if my order went through. I remember faxing forms but that is about it. LOL

Robert suggested using a rubber bung of the right size to give a uniform grip to the ring, I took a hacksaw to it!

I had several 486 filters that needed the glass reversing, some were assembled with the MRC scratch resistant coating on the inside and the IR-UV cut filter on the outside. I also wanted a glass for John's WATE adapter. Most I could undo the retaining ring by pressing the filter down on a thin sheet of rubber, but others wouldn't budge. Here's how I undid them.

In the UK you can get a type of handycraft PVA glue that never sets hard. It remains like tacky rubber. I have a bottle called "Tacky Glue" by Deluxe Materials. Deluxe Materials Miniaturist Products

I painted a thin film of glue on the retaining rings and allowed it to partially dry. I then repeated the proceedure until the ring of glue was higher than the edge of the filter mount. You have to be careful not to get the glue on the filter glass or any of the threads, the glue should only be on the retaining ring. The filters were left overnight or until the glue changed from opaque white to clear and transparent.

After the glue has dried if the filters are pressed against a clean sheet of glass they stick firmly and it is an easy matter to unscrew the retaining ring. Afterwards you can pull off the glue with tweezers or by rubbing with your fingers. The glue is soluble in Methylated spirit or Eclipse so it's easily removed from any part of the filter if needed. You can use a blob of dried glue on a matchstick to turn and tighten the retaining ring when reassembling.

Thanks the fast reply.

I defiantly want o order an adapter.

I also need to no what filter size so that I can order it from Leica.

49mm filter. We're hoping the glass size of the Leica 49mm filter and the threaded retaining ring is the same as that of the B+W filter whose glass fits the current adapter.
