I know when to get off the bus and ask directions. ROTFLMAO

This really could be great

I just recently purchased a WATE thinking that the internal rangefinder framelines would be activated when using the 18 (24), and 21 (28) framelines. I found that the framelines remained constant regardless of focal length chosen unlike the original 3E. Is this normal for this lens? Does it really requires the use of either the WATE external viewfinder or the 21,24,28 external viewfinder.

This is true of the normal TE but not the WATE. All the focal lengths are outside the viewfinder range so it just sets the 28/90 frame and required you to use an external finder. This of course is one of the issues with the lens - the camera doesn't know the selected focal length for in-camera image correction, so we're expecting a manual selection when firmware 1.10 comes along.

Thanks for the info. I will await the update and hopefully this will be able to solve the problem with lens selection on the EXIF files. However, it still will not activate the internal viewfinder for the 24 and 28 framelines. I also find it curiously strange that Leica doesn't offer the IR Cut filter for this unique lens. One can't buy after-market filters from B&W or Heliopan for this due to the unusual filter mounting configuration. If anyone in this forum comes up with a solution I can have a machine shop try and produce a prototype of the mount.

Herbert, you need to read around some more - lots of information on this thread alone. We've been talking about an alternative filter holder which will allow the lens hood and cap which comes with the lens to still be used.

Leica's official solution is to provide the filter holder (14473) and one of the IR filters they will be offering will be the 67mm filter to go with it. In practice, it doesn't work too well, lets in dust, obscures the viewfinder, causes stray reflections, doesn't have a lens hood or lens cap solution and so on and the word from Solms appears to be that they think it's just fine.

Update i am packing the WATE today to get to John and hopefully by weeks end i can test it and take some shots of it for the board. This will be a great alternative to a very good lens that just needs a little customizing for M8 shooters. I am going to forward this thread also to Leica for them to see the development on this. With the new firmware coming the WATE will play a nice roll in the Leica lineup of lenses, I have to say having 3 focal lengths in a lens just a little bigger than a 50 lux is certainly nice

it will be interesting to see the "patented" Leica thread and what that means. if I can come up with a screw ring to secure the glass, maybe using the stock filter retainer, I'll do it.

The crazy thing is that Leica will have access to the CNC programming for both parts of the thread, so for them to do this adapter would not be a huge effort.

I expect parts for the lens and hood/filter holder are made by this company:

Uwe Weller Feinwerktechnik, Wetzlar, 10 minutes drive or so from Solms.

ACM, who own the majority of Leica also have a majority ownership of this company. On their website, you can see parts from Leica products, for example, the lens barrel of a normal Tri-Elmar: Weller-Feinwerktechnik and a 360 degree view: Weller-Feinwerktechnik

Actually i would like to send one to Stefan Daniels and get the ball rolling on these. Either have Leica build them or contract John to make them, if he wanted too. let's face it there are about 25 folks on this board that would buy one RIGHT NOW

Fantastic ! This thread is full of new ideas and action ! Yesterday I sent an E-mail to Solms with a link for this thread, asking them to review their position and eventually propose something along the lines defined by Mark, Guy and John and the other contributors of this thread.

I am not sure it will change their minds but they might consider that a straight NO would be neither a good nor a commercial answer.....One can always dream, no ?

I will need some filter info: specifically, the glass thickness of a B+W 486 filter and the new Leica filter,

I have in hand a B+W 49mm 469 (adorama didn't have a 486, amd am expecting my two Leica filters, 36 and 55mm and will call tony today for a 49/486.

it this works out we will do a production run for sure.

John, a B&W filter glass out of a 52mm 486 filter is 2.19mm; I expect the 49mm filter will be the same. The diameter of the glass out of a 52mm is 48.9mm; if that same filter ring overhead is repeated for the 49, the glass would be 45.9mm which would fit the internal diameter of 46.8mm I suggested. The glass has two different chamfers front and rear.
