Guy,

I do not have a WATE, but after reading all the stuff here, not sure what thread you are talking about. The red threads are a special non-standard pitch and require that rubber gasket to help keep tension to the proper stop position. I did not think there were any internal threads as the front element protrudes slightly.

Tell us where you are going with this, and I am sure folks will be able to direct you to the wrong turns better than me ;-)

Okay my thought was this get 2 filters 49mm is what I thought and take the glass out of them. Than screw them on the lens, the red thread and create like a extension tube that would get you out past the lens at 16mm mark, sticks out the farthest. Than the third filter is the IR and yes put it on backwards also but turn the glass around than screw the hood on that. Basically it is 3 49 threaded filters going backwards and the last one has the IR fliter flipped in it than you have that last thread sticking out that you screw the hood on. But it's all crap if it is 50mm so there goes that idea

Yea was trying to build a extension tube setup to get past that point but there is no 50mm anything out there to try it. Bummed I bought a 67mm filter this morning 150 bucks I think. Yuk

Your solution can't come fast enough

LJ, for someone who doesn't have the lens, you speak with surprising authority. I have the lens and it's 50mm diameter, 1mm pitch.

Mark,

Not meaning to tread on anyone's toes here. Sorry if you were offended. I was simply responding to Guy's inquiry, and my limited information actually came from reading a lot of your posts and those discussions. I do not have the lens, and did not offer up the specifics that you were able to provide. It appears that we were both posting at the same time. Just trying to offer what little help I could, and not trying to be "authoritative" at all. Please chill a bit....it is Friday in most of the world

I've been reading all threads concerning the WATE and in view of those hood/filter problems, aggravated by the freezing tendency of the O ring, I decided to forget about that lens and buy a 35 lux instead with my 30%.

However, Guy's and other's enthusiasm for that lens + Mark's dedication to find an elegant solution for the hood/filter makes makes me think it all over again. But, one thing is sure : Leica has no immediate plan to market such a combined hood+filter. This was confirmed to me by the belgian Leica distributor ( after approaching Solms on that matter ).

So, please Mark, tell us soonest that you found a workeable solution. I would really like to order that WATE.

Michel, I'm working on it, waiting for the company doing the work to clear their backlog. The ring is 12.4mm thick, screws on to the front of the lens and the standard hood screws on to the front of it. It adds 7.4mm to the overall length of the lens. The latest design glues the filter glass in from the back so you can't see the glue...

My preference is to replicate the threads on the front of the lens and inside the lens hood exactly - including using the o-ring on the front thread. I've just ordered 100 o-rings (minimum order quantity) at 50 US cents a time...

During that last 1/10 of a turn, you are relying on the hood/filter holder to slide over the o-ring, not snag it and stretch it, so I recommend running a soft pencil around the ridge inside the lens hood/filter holder to help things along.

Well i need this bad . i shot with the 67 filter holder and bam got to see a nice magenta aperture effect in my image. I am taping those windows to see all they do is cause flare. Love the lens but the filter design needs improvement. Mark i really want one at almost any cost or something that will work better. This 50mm thread is the trouble. If it was a standard thread i wouldhave something built already. Even a rubber lens hood to stick the filter in would be better. Hmmm that maybe a idea

Guy, a suggestion which Steve made is to use the filter ring with holes taped up with the 21/24 hood taped to the front. You could put a 55mm filter into the front of the hood from behind, past the latches, held in place with blu-tac (or whatever it's called in the US). Might vignette though...

I'm still waiting for my WATE....but my interim WFM (Waiting For Mark) solution will be the standard 67mm Leica filter adapter, with a 67-to-55 step down ring, a 55mm IR filter, and a screw-in 55mm lens hood.

The 55mm filter should be OK due to the crop factor (and I already have one). And other than the funny 67mm ring sticking out in the middle, it should be basically right and not too big.

Guy, Mark; I could make these for you next week. the only thing holding me back is I don't have a WATE in my hands (yet). if you get hung up with Mark's supplier, let me know.

Note jlm's post. John is a very talented custom fabricator, as one can see from his web site.

Guy,

If you can spare it for a week (still shooting the hotel?) then I'd suggest sending the WATE to John and letting him see what he can do.

Cheers,

Sean

Thanks Sean thinking the same thing here. All we really need here that may work is a way to put a flared metal hood from the 50 thread out past the 16mm lens setting and screw a 55mm threaded fitter on is one idea . Or do the same thing like Mark is a flared hood with a slot for a 52 filter inside the hood than keep flaring to like 60mm as the hood part.

There are several ways to do this. Marks design retains the orginal hood which I like that idea the most but hell almost anything like it would work
