Then this sounds your own problem ... and Leica doesn't make the M8 for you exclusively, don't you agree?

Simon,

What kind of a question is this?

Sure they don´t make it exclusively for me. This is only my opinion as you have yours. I tried to communicate that. I am sorry if my english isn´t that good.

But what is yours? That Leica has made a mistake? Your postings suggets this to me.

Kindly Regards

Sorry if I haven't made myself clear, Jørn ... so you're happy with what's already there, right? that's ok. No one has suggested Leica to remove the 8bit DNG as an option, people were simply suggesting Leica to ADD 16 bit as an option ... of course you can always ignore it if you don't like it.

You are right, I meant to say that Leica has made a mistake. :)

Guy, and others ... reading the last several posts, I am beginning to think that this can be changed in the firmware with the existing hardware. Is this a possibility? If so, and if Leica does it, they'll be the most responsive camera manufacturer in history.

Indeed it can - LFI says they had a 16 bit proto firmware but decide not to release it because "people" couldn't see the difference. It's as if they think that the M8 will only be used by the Jpeg crowd.

I'm also for the 16-bit option.

None of us has any way of knowing, but I'm with Bill thinking it could be built into a firmware update.

He also says that although a 12-bit linear file (Canon, Nikon etc) offers better than 2800 grey levels at the right end, the M8 divides the brightest full stop into only 88 different levels. That is obviously a great difference on paper, but is it visible?

Actually, I believe the human eye discriminates highlight hues much better than shadow hues.

Edmund--

As I recall, the LFI article said the prototype firmware didn't produce a DNG, and they had to go through some work to extract a usable file from that firmware.

But as for JPG, didn't a respected testing organization (BJP perhaps?) report that the M8 delivered a wider dynamic range in JPG than other cameras AND a wider range than its own DNG? Just my recollection.

So is this a fine kettle of fish or a can of worms? :D

Frankly, I would like to see ProPhoto RGB as an alternate color workspace besides sRGB, Adobe RGB, and ECI RGB; it would be more useful to the kind of shooters that use the M8 (fine art shooters). ProPhoto RGB encompasses almost all of LAB gamut and then some. Leica could easily replace the ECI RGB that fewer Leica shooters would use.
