Synchronizing times on bodies

We usually have 3 or 4 photogs on an event. With the Nikons and Rd1's it is easy to sync the times because the seconds reset to 00 when you hit set. The m8 only syncs the minutes and can not stop the seconds when you hit set. I was able to work around this by taking a shot with the M8 and starting a stopwatch (since the m8 doesn't display seconds), view the info for the shot to see the time, and then setting the D2x to the next 1 minute and whatever the seconds were and hitting set on the d2x after 60 seconds. This is a pain, but works. Now that I am using multiple m8 bodies, I can't stop the seconds to sync them. The m8's are the only cameras I have that do not set the seconds when you hit set.

Sometimes within a minute is not good enough when people are shooting fast. I have to rearrange the images in post before renumbering. With 3000 or more images this is not alot of fun. Am I missing something, anyone have an easier way, is there a way to reset the seconds in the m8? If not, it sure would be nice in future firmware if the seconds would reset also when you set the time (and were visible in the menu).

I have a very similar set up to you. I have found that I have everyone take an image at the exact same time. Photomechanic has the great feature that allows you to adjust the capture times to sync with one particular frame. So using your d2x as the master it just shifts the capture times of the M8's by the required number of seconds (or in one case by 10 years :) ) and everything gets back on sync. I fully expect that at least one assistant has not adjusted their camera to mine correctly. Att 150.00, photomechanic is worth it just for that and it's renaming, rotating abilities alone.

Hope this helps.

Phil,

I was wondering about this myself, so glad you raised the point. With my Canon 1-series cameras, I just sync them to the computer clock on my Apple G5 using one of Canon's utilities. This has been working perfectly for me for some time. With the M8 in the mix, I am now faced with a similar time sync problem myself. I had not checked the other software that shipped with the M8 for connecting to a computer (tethered shooting), so I do not know if there is a utility within it for doing something similar (syncing to the computer clock). Worth a look. I feel this sort of utility and funcionality is important for folks working with multiple bodies and especially so for event stuff where you may have 20-40 more shots in that minute you are trying to sync to.

Karen,

This is great news. I had been using PM before, but drifted away for a while and am considering returning, simply because it is so fast, provided great quick viewing, ranking, and renaming. I too think it worth the money. Just one more app to maintain and get to work with others, however, so we have to deal with things somehow.

Quick question.....does PM actually change the EXIF data on the RAW file to reflect the new capture time? Have there been any issues with those files after the change has been made? (Sorry, that was two questions. The second part reflects some of the problems folks have had with software not being able to read altered RAW files in the past.)

I've not had any problem with compatibility with other programs. The newest version is curretnly in beta and supports M8 dng's completely. I have had no issues with updated exif compatibility either.

It is wonderfully fast and fits seemlessly with Photoshop if you want it to. It's resizing feature is very very fast too.

I can add to the praise for PhotoMechanic. I've been using it for years and the new 4.5 version (still in Beta) has some well thought out additional features which you can read about here:

Thanks, Karen. I had seen the latest news about the v 4.5 beta, and that has peaked my interest again. I use Aperture, RAW Developer, ACR/PS, C1 and sometime Graphic Converter with my files, so I have several different workflows depending on what kind of RAW processing look I want. What really seems great about the latest version of PM is that one could do all the ranking and annotation work during the culling process in PM, and have that "stick" so that you do not have to re-enter that in other apps. This is particulary true for PS if you have to go through Bridge.

I will probably give it a shot again, as I have been laboring too long with other "front end" sorting/previewing methods lately. I shoot a lot of equestrian and polo, and it is not uncommon for me to shoot 3-4K shots in a day or double that for a weekend event. Speed in sorting and viewing matters, as does getting things in sync with multiple cameras.

I know the volume of which you speak. We shoot weddings and between myself, my other 2 photographers and 3 assistants, all often using different cameras, the volume just in previewing and culling gets riduculous. PM can allow you to just whip through that part.

I generally tag the keepers, (I burn the throw outs to dvd just in case of .... something) and then, since I previewed according to capture time, rename only the keepers in perfect chronology. From there, (after burning backup #2) it can go into any number of different workflows. If anyone can think of a quicker route to do that, let me know. But honestly for me so far, this has worked great.

By the way, I just ordered my upgrade to the new 4.5 from Camera Bits. It should be out by the end of the month. The "hook" is that if one orders pre-release, you get an extra 3 months added to your subscription for updates.

They also said they are in ihe development loop for Apples new "Leopard" OS release coming soon and PhotoMechanic will be fully compatible. These folks are a model for how small software developers should operate.
