ir/cut & polarizer with 21 Elmarit

thanks to the heads up on this forum I got my first ir/cut filter from Tony Rose & having been very pleased with the results

as I noted before, the greater problem for me was green foliage, which we are seeing in abundance now here in Houston ...black to magenta shifts just haven't been as big a problem as J Roberts excellent profiles help and they are relatively simple to correct in post

foliage greens are another matter

happily the 486 filter does the trick ...with the filter on the M8 delivers gorgeous, vibrant greens indeed

the 55 for my 21 Elmarit sold by Popflash Photo was not labeled as Slim or Wide, but indeed turns out to be a Wide and does not vignette at all with the Elmarit 21, even with the aperture wide open

quite remarkably it does not appear to vignette much at all with both the 486 filter & a slim polarizer attached as well, much to my surprise ...here is an example (an illustrative snap of my backyard)

a larger version & shooting information can be found here

Leica M8 photographs Photo Gallery by Artichoke Vinagrette at pbase.com along with other examples illustrating the difficulty of getting good foliage (the calla lilies) without the ir/cut filter & the abundant virtues to be had using it

now if only Leica will come through with their freebies ...I wrote them about this & got a very sweet & prompt response saying that they are a bit overwhelmed by the success of the M8 (which I understand) ...I have learned that the Leica ir/cut may not be as good as the BW as the Leica is not coated & have been tempted to get them ...I wonder if Leica would credit me for their value towards another purchase???

Hi Arther

I'm sourcing the 486 filter for my 21 asph as well. Is this the IR-UV filter you are using?

Spezialfilter 486 UV IR Cut

55,0 mm F-PRO Digital (black)

It is not the slim version, so can the standard 21 hood be put on properly in place with this filter?

Thanks for your kind advice.

Cheers

Matthew

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

was not specified "slim" but I noted that BW has both a "slim" and a "wide" version available, with the "wide" having an outer thread for attaching other filters and the "slim" not

the folks at PopFlash Photo where I got mine weren't certain about vignetting on the 21, though someone there thought it would work ...the box from BW lists mine as

55 DIGI PRO UV-IR-CUT CHROM with the numbers 486 and 19759 imprinted on the box

no where on the actual filter is "wide" noted

the actual filter is just under 4 mm in width of the outer rim, so this may help you if you can measure it or have it measured before you purchase ...shooting with it is the best course, but like me, you may have to get this mail order

the supplied hood fits snugly but quite well with the lens attached, though is loose with the added circular polarizer, as it was when I used the polarizer without the IR/CUT filter

I note no vignetting at all f stops with this filter, but my lens is a factory coded version ...with a slim circular polarizer attached over the IR/CUT the vignetting is remarkably minor wide open and virtually disappears by f 4 or there abouts from my further testing ...really excellent

I think this IR/CUT filter business maddening as I passed on this filter in the past as it was not labeled "wide"

I think the folks at BW are a bit confused in how they label their filters ...mine lacks a "wide" designation, but clearly works fine with the M8 ...it amazes me that it has taken BW this long to get up to speed with these filters ...I am still waiting on my Leicas (which someone in the Photo forum suggested might not be coated like the BW and therefore more prone to introducing optical problems ...I cannot imagine Leica would put their name on a less than pukka piece of glass, however)

of course the 1.33 crop factor of the M8 may be sparing some vignetting as well ...as I do not intend using it with a film camera, I don't know that this is a problem, unless one day I get a FF RF, which could happen, but is not likely in the near future

Dear Arthur

Thank you for your prompt response. So I shall be confident on the 55mm 486 F-PRO filter with hood.

BTW you got a chrome 21 asph =) Lucky man.

Cheers

no, I just got the chrome filter

the lens is a black 21 asph ...couldn't find a black filter & as I always use a hood with my lenses, it is no big aesthetic problem, which doesn't matter much to me anyway

that said I do like the look of chrome & have a chrome M8

:o
