photolandscape Posted March 21, 2007 Share #1 Posted March 21, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Two days ago I filled a San Disk Extreme III 2GB card with 154 jpegs and DNG's of an antiwar rally. I could review them on the LCD, but my computer/San Disk reader would not recognize them. A couple of people suggested Photo Rescue, and rescue the images it did, thankfully. Today, back out on the street. This time with what I believe is a Leica-approved SD card--a 512MB Lexar, about 2 years old. It has always worked well. As I started shooting, I noticed it was very, very slow to write to the SD card. I kept shooting away, and noticed that the red data transfer indicator kept flashing for several minutes. I tried to take another shot, but the camera shutter didn't respond. After waiting 2-3 minutes, I decided to open the camera, remove and reinsert the battery, and try again. I lost all 10-12 shots I'd taken. Not a huge loss in this case. Started over--same battery, same card. Took a few pictures. Shutter dead again. Removed and reinserted battery. Started shooting and took 22 shots, trying not to shoot too much too fast so as to overload the buffer. In trying to download the card, the camera recognizes the images and plays them back. But my Powermac G5/San Disk reader does not. So it's Photo Rescue to the rescue again. By the way, I have two Leica M8 batteries, and this has happened while using both. So, is this a camera problem? It's been back to its birthplace, Solms, once, for a seven week world tour, and I am not anxious to go down that road again. But using Photo Rescue to download every card isn't a sustainable approach. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

barjohn Posted March 21, 2007 Share #2 Posted March 21, 2007 I know this may sound crazy but it is cheap and quick, try another newer card. i have been using the Sandisk Ultra IIs and I haven't had either problem with them and they write reasonably quickly. Shootist Posted March 21, 2007 Share #7 Posted March 21, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Until you try a different card, manufacturer and type like a Lexar Pro 133x or even a Sandisc Ext II, you won't know if it's the cards or the camera. I just ordered 2-2GB Lexar 133X cards, and may also try a Transcend 150X and a Ridata 155X--if they all work correctly, I'd have enough cards to cover a day's worth of shooting most of the time. Andi f one or more don't work well, I'll return them and just use the ones that do work well. I'm going to try everything I can to avoid having to send it back to Leica. But it needs to be more reliable if I'm going to go places like Easter Island and Machu Picchu. At least I have four months to iron out the problems, and I do hope 1.10 makes it a more reliable machine. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

AlanJW Posted March 21, 2007 Share #11 Posted March 21, 2007 First, if you bought your Sandisk on ebay you should know that many there turn out to be counterfeit. Second, the M8 does seem sensitive to different cards. I have one no-name 2G card that worked perfectly in a Panasonic, works perfectly (though slowly) in a D-Lux 3, but which cannot be used in the M8. The M8 will not recognize it, and if I try to format it, the format message appears, the red light blinks --- and it will stay that way until the battery is pulled and reinserted and a different card is used. I am now using 2 different Transcend 150x 2G cards --- and a 1G Sandisk card with no issues. The non-name has been relagated to the DLux 3. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
