Has anyone been to the M8 Digital Workshop Tour?

I went to the workshop in NYC last Sunday at Parsons. I think it

was worthwhile. The mix in skill level of attendees was considerable. A lot of ground

was covered and what people got out of it would vary accordingly.

Quick overview of camera, good length of time on color management and specific settings for C1 with an overview of the software. I think generally people were happy with the workshop and the leader, Scott, was extremely personable and motivated to make the workshop meaningful.

It's difficult when expectations are all over the board,

I agree with Bradford above. Scott was a great and enthusiastic presenter as were the Leica people very willing to help. There was a great mix in the RAW or DNG processing skill levels of the participants, but I think all had a good time.

This is an excellent course for very beginning digital users and even those just contemplating an M8 purchase.

Great shwagbag at the end. Leica pen, key chain, mouse pad, calendar (with some outstanding images through the years) and a CD of the covered topics.

I went to the one in Las Vegas.

I take it Leica supplied the camera and lenses?

Alan

Yes alan,

They had a ton of M8's and lenses. You should bring your own M8 if you have one. Arrive early, and you could possibly get your pick of a lens you have been fawning after for the day.

What percent was C1 workflow vs other things?

Lisa, my guess would be that the C1 workflow was about 20%-25%, then he takes it into Photoshop for another 5%. the instructor Scott, really knows both programs and is very enthusiastic. He also took one image to print on an Epson 2400.

I could tell there were a lot of beginner/intermediate PS users when he got ooohs and ahhh. by simply using the "Ruler Tool" to straighten and crop an image.

It seems like Bradford W. above and I had exactly the same experience when taking the workshop at two different locations. (We also calibrated the monitors with the Gretag Macbeth equipment, now owned by X-rite.)

So if anyone is completely new to Photo processing software, this is probably the course for you.

Hmmm i would like to do a survey here on the forum on this on what kind of class or workshop folks would like to do. Stuff like 1 or 2 day , On location or classroom and what type of stuff you would like.

Guy,

I can almost see the "workshop wheels" turning in your head. Personally, I think a well designed shooting and processing workshop would be nice to offer. Something beyond the simple "this is your camera; this is a computer" offering. (Not criticizing the Leica workshop. As others have pointed out, the range of participants is quite broad, so they have to appeal to the entire spectrum to some degree.) My thinking was more of a somewhat more advanced offering that requires some level of proficiency already, and then takes things further along the path. This is sort of what the D65 workshops offered by Seth Resnick do, but it would be nice to have the focus (literally) on the Leica rangefinder, since there are lots more nuances and variations for shooting and processing.

Keep the wheels spinning.....

Hi Guy,

I would like to have an on-location class with someone experienced with the M8 for outdoor/nature photography.

I would have loved to see how you approached your trip to Yosemite, for instance.

Thanks, steve

I'd be interested in a 2 day course, covering approaches to different types of photography, maximizing post processing results, coupled with some real world shooting. And, of course, slanted toward M8/RF photography.

I take classes all the time! Keeps me shooting and thinking about photography and also as an intended break form the real world. I have taken a Street Photography workshop in Paris through Maine Workshops, I take 5 and 10 week workshops at ICP. I go to Photo Plus in NY every autumn and am going to my second NAPP photshop world in two weeks. I am doing a workshop in Martha's Vineyard in late summer. I have done some weekend ICP workshops as well as a few others and am considering the Leica day in NYC in May.

I also have a B.F.A. in photography (not that that really means much) but it's always changing and moving forward so I think it's important to do workshops.

So a two day on location part classroom shooting than back to processing and output in a nice location like a Yosemite or some nice place like that 6 to 8 people and all hands on with instructor and i would imagine Saturday and Sunday so don't interfere with folks real jobs. Also Leica sponsored i would assume. Hmmm

My wheels have been spinning a long time on this stuff, really something I WANT to do.

I just signed up for the NY workshop in May. My birthday is the following weekend so I'll consider it a birthday gift to myself. Now I'll never be able to send my camera off to Germany to get updated.

Hi Guy,

I would work hard to be there. I can't imagine how much I would learn.

Thanks, steve

Guy,

We have to talk about this.....get it beyond a single workshop and into a "series" of workshops to better accomodate different kinds of shooting. The Yosemite thing would be a great relaxing, scenics and some rich details type shooting, where emphasis is on color, comp, and finishing touches or something. Then maybe another one in a more urban setting to get folks into street shooting and or cafe/pub type shooting. Emphasis more on B/W, higher speed, noise and motion controls, and other stuff like that. Then maybe a portrait shooting workshop at a nice setting....Napa Valley anybody?.....emphasis on lighting in studio and mixed with nice outdoor/ambient, and DOF control or something. Add some nice processing tricks for stunning portraiture results.

As you can tell, this could be an incredible "series" of workshops geared specifically at the Leica shooter. The Leica sponsorship would be really important both from a technical perspective, and to provide a variety of lenses for folks to test/use in the specific workshop. I know things like this are being offered in gereral, or on more expaneded basis, but nothing has been geared for the rangefineder shooter and the unique skills and great tools that go with that kind of shooting. This could be a lot of fun, get some folks into some more serious applications or expand horizons, and really push and test the gear. Keeping them fairly short, rather tightly focussed, and in several interesting locations with smaller groups would probably work out quite well.

Damn, now you have my wheels spinning
