Rick Posted November 24, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted November 24, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I watched a near-mint (A/B) version of this lens sell on WestLicht Photographica Auction sell today for $9,594 (including auction fee). Only 155 of the ASPH model were made. I guess this is destined to become a cabinet-queen.
robsteve Posted November 24, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted November 24, 2012 The RED camera users have discovered them. I just sold mine to a red user. Â In other words, they are going to be used, not collected.
naturephoto1 Posted November 24, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted November 24, 2012 That is a lot of money. I will just live with my 1 stop slower f4 35mm-70mm Vario Elmar lens which I just received in E++/M- condition for less than 10% of that price. Â I'll save my money for an 80-200mm f4 Vario Elmar lens to either compliment or substitute for my 70-210mm f4 Vario Elmar and an f4 280mm Apo Telyt to compliment my f2.8 280mm Apo Telyt. Rick Posted November 25, 2012 Author Share #4  Posted November 25, 2012 The RED camera users have discovered them. I just sold mine to a red user. In other words, they are going to be used, not collected.  Yeah, that has been going on for at least a couple years. They take apart the mount and remove the ball bearing for the aperture click-stop so they can smoothly and continuously change the f-stop. Let's hope someone is going to use it. I'm happy for you that you used all your stuff.

roguewave Posted November 29, 2012 Share #6 Â Posted November 29, 2012 I've shot many frames with this lens. It's just ok to my eye, nothing really special. It doesn't have any stellar qualities. I think the Red is a good choice for it's use, but even there, it's nothing spectacular. In truth none of the focal lengths available in this lens comes anywhere close to the signature of the Leica primes at the same focal length. Wide open, it really isn't able to compete with the primes. If you use it for landscapes stopped down to 4 or greater, thats a whole different story, but this lens just doesn't have a great bokeh at any stop. Â Also, this lens is heavy. Really heavy. Not my idea of fun at all. It will be a monster to use with a small body like the M. The ergonomics & balance just don't work.

roguewave Posted November 30, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted November 30, 2012 Rob, this is a fine image, but nowhere close to a Lux 80, Lux 75 or a Lux 50. Primes are primes. They are in a league of their own.
Einst_Stein Posted December 1, 2012 Share #9 Â Posted December 1, 2012 Leica R zoom vs. Leica R prime is probably not the most relevant question. Leica R zoom vs Canon/Nikon zoom would be more important. After all, I believe most photographers interested in them are more likely to use on Canon or Nikon DSLR, ..., untill new Leica M hit the user's hand. Â Any comparison or review on r 35-70mm/f2.8 vs. Canon or Nikon 24-70mm/f2.8? What about Leica R 35-70mm/f4 vs. Canon or Nikon 24-70mm/f2.8?
algrove Posted December 2, 2012 Share #10 Â Posted December 2, 2012 Don't mean to change the subject, but where does the 28-90 R zoom fit into the wide/short tele zoom R lens lineup? Â Leica was featuring that lens at Photokina on the M-240. Why due to its weight and balance on the camera?

Why due to its weight and balance on the camera?  I believe that this was the last Leica zoom lens to be developed and is an asperic lens. It was one of their best zooms and now sells for about $4,000 on the used market. It had the widest zoom range of the moderate wide angle to short telephoto range.  Rich
Rick Posted December 2, 2012 Author Share #12 Â Posted December 2, 2012 This is reported to be a fantastic lens and was only made in small quantity (2,000'ish). Erwin Puts felt this lens was as good as the 35-70/2.8. Nice lens with a great range. I don't own this lens.

It is my travel lens of choice. Much better value that the 35-70/2.8, whose price is inflated by its cult collector status way beyond what is worth paying for a working lens. I'm surprised though that it's gone up in price to quite as much as $4000 (though the more desirable R glass has taken off recently). The 21-35 wide zoom is also very good. Â Just happens the 28-90 was the first R lens I bought the evening of 18 September on the internet after handling and shooting with it on the new M at Photokina. It has already gone up USD1000+ from when I bought it. Are we all crazy? Don't answer that question out loud or in writing.
