-Can it work with a flash cord?  -De Leica X2 has a studio mode in the flash menu, but I don't understand it, is this meaning that the internal flash can flash as a master? and flash a external flash as slave? s38 Posted November 16, 2012 Share #2  Posted November 16, 2012 I use Nikon SC-17 cable and Leica SF 20 flash with my X2. It works just fine.
nickma Posted November 16, 2012 Share #3  Posted November 16, 2012 Buy the Metz 34-CS2 slave flash, pop up the X1/X2 flash, and you'll be able to use the Metz as an off camera slave, works exceedingly well, MUCH better than the Leica SF24D.  The settings in the Leica will automatically default to Studio, although these can be manually overridden.  It's a bargain at €104 too. CalArts 99 Posted November 16, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted November 16, 2012 In the X2's studio mode there is no preflash and so you can use any inexpensive optical hot shoe slave with any flash (or a mono plug slave depending on the flash.) No real reason to go corded or expensive radio wave unless you have flashes hidden out of the sight line and/or are very far away.
nickma Posted November 16, 2012 Share #5 Â Posted November 16, 2012 No real reason to go corded or expensive radio wave unless you have flashes hidden out of the sight line and/or are very far away. Â Unless you have a viewfinder permanently attached to the hotshot perhaps?
CalArts 99 Posted November 16, 2012 Share #6 Â Posted November 16, 2012 Unless you have a viewfinder permanently attached to the hotshot perhaps? Â Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're saying, but an optical flash slave attaches to any external flash, not to the camera's hot shoe. The hot shoe on the camera remains free. nickma Posted November 16, 2012 Share #7 Â Posted November 16, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I think the misunderstanding was on my part! Â I guess the Metz 34 CS2 IS what you describe within a single unit, as it is a remote compact flash that simply fires off the pop up flash. Â I don't know how the X2 works, although I'd imagine it's similar to my X1, which is that the flash mode seems to default to 'studio' mode at the moment that the Metz slave unit picks up the camera's flash. CalArts 99 Posted November 17, 2012 Share #8  Posted November 17, 2012 I believe the X1 and X2 are identical in their flash operation. The pop up flash will trigger any slave unit whether built into the flash unit itself like the Metz, or with a hot shoe slave that can be used with any flash unit like this optical slave: Amazon.com: Cowboystudio SYK-3 Optical Slave Trigger: Camera & Photo  The difference with studio mode is that there is no preflash like the other modes (for red eye and for auto distance readings.) A preflash of course would fire off any external flashes and you don't want that.  The only real drawback with this is the low output of the camera's pop up flash which means the distance might not be far enough to reach external flashes with slaves attached. That's when the radio transmitters come in handy.
robert blu Posted November 17, 2012 Share #9 Â Posted November 17, 2012 I use with my x1 the small Metz 28 CS 2, more details in post 2 and 3 here. I hope it helps. robert
metalbernd Posted November 17, 2012 Author Share #10 Â Posted November 17, 2012 Thank you al for your answers, really great! Â So: -Put the X2 on studio mode, it wil trigger a external flash. -Do I have to look for a specific brand or type flash? -Can I trigger a Nikon or Yongnuo flash with my X2 only with the pop up flash in studio mode? Â Sorry for my questions, I don't want to buy the wrong flash.
nickma Posted November 17, 2012 Share #11 Â Posted November 17, 2012 So: -Put the X2 on studio mode, it wil trigger a external flash. Â It will trigger an external SLAVE. As Robert says, buy the Metz 28 CS 2.
