Welcome to the forum!

 

I think there is a general consensus that Voigtlander lenses are hard to beat for the price, especially if you buy used.

 

However, to me the whole point of buying a Leica camera is to get access to the lenses. Don't decide that you don't like a Leica before you try the lenses.

 

A leica Elmarit-M 28mm 2.8 (not the ASPH version) can easily be had for a thousand dollars, especially if you do not require mint condition. These are workhorse lenses, known to be very sharp and durable. Also, they will become rougly 35mm on the M8, a very nice focal lenght.

It is also a nice lens to keep, should you upgrade to M9 at a later date.

The asph version is considerably smaller but also a bit more expensive (but not a lot!)

 

If you are able to stretch your budget a tiny bit, the current 28/2.8 ASPH is a extremely nice allround lens for the M8.

I've got the 28mm Elmarit-M ASPH. I've used it on the Leica M8.2 and it's a great lens! I now own a Leica M9 and it's a really nice wide-angle.

 

I got mine for a nice price with a year warranty, with the box included and the leather case.

I would love a Zeiss 25mm, I have their 21mm f2.8 and it is a great lens. Last week i picked up a Leitz 28mm f2.8 Elmarit for $750.00 used in mint condition. It is my new body cap. Keep it on my M8.2 and so far it is a real winner. If you can find on at that price point it is a wonderful lens.

It is all about the lenses & small size. Zeiss lenses are decent, Leica are preferred by me at least.

 

CV are definitely economy class.

 

My CV25 is not worth the effort to take it to the trash bin unless you like a soft image starting at 15 mm from the center and one edge losing more than the other.

 

Even the better ones are no match for Leica or Zeiss.

 

Zeiss 35 2.8 is supposed to be quite nice, very sharp with good contrast.

 

The M8 needs uv/ir filters to get proper colors. Just a fact. And it is more than blacks going purple.

 

Then when you add the filters, you get cyan corners just a bit with 35, more so the wider you go. There are software solutions in the camera, however the lens must be coded in order to have them applied. "Corner Fix" is another solution, Works well, but is a pain with an extra processing step. Price is right though.

 

To code the Zeiss, you will need to do it yourself.

Have you experienced any cyan corners with the Zeiss 25? And how about an example shot ;)

 

I recently figured that my 21 Elmarit, despite being an excellent lens, is not a good match for me, it's just too wide even on the M8. I've been looking at 24/25/28s since and since my other two lenses are Zeiss, the Zeiss 25 obviously pops up.

Another vote for the Voigtlander 2/28. The Summicron ASPH may have an edge on it but in my experience you are not going to find a better deal for less than $1000. My guess is that it delivers performance similar to lenses from the Dr. Mandler era. It's sharp at f2, well built and doesn't intrude excessively in to the viewfinder. I've had mine now for about 2 years and am very satisfied with it.

The 28mm/2.8 Elmarit ASPH is the best general purpose 28mm I have used. I also have the 28mm/2 Summicron ASPH, which is a great lens but pictorially is more suited to photojournalism, if you want where the in focus subject is to be isolated against a blurred background. The Summicron has strong bokeh at f/2 of course. But I compared the bokeh at 2 meters for their common apertures and the Elmarit has less blur from f/2.8-f/8 than the Summicron and at f/11 they look the same. This means the Elmarit is probably better for landscape images because the background will appear to be more in focus than the same scene shot with the Summicron. However, the background blur at 0.7-1 meter with the Elmarit gets much busier than the Summicron’s close range bokeh.

 

I also used to have the Zeiss 28mm which on film was as good as the Elmarit ASPH, but had better close range bokeh than the Leica lens. On the M8.2 the Zeiss will not be easy to code for 6 bit though. Newer ZM lenses have a grove so you can pen in the code, but on old gooveless ones the code rubs off easily.

No doubt in my mind, Zeiss ZM 25 f/2.8. I have experience with the ZM 25, Elmar-M 24 ASPH, Elmarit-M 28 ASPH, and Summicron 28 ASPH - best value for money is the Zeiss. And without regard to cost, this is how I'd rank them in imaging quality, splitting a lot of hairs because they're all superb, imvho:

 

1. Elmar-M 24 ASPH

2. Zeiss ZM 25 f/2.8

3. Summicron 28 ASPH

4. Elmarit-M 28 ASPH

And, provided you look around and don't pay top dollar for any of these lenses, you are unlikely to lose much on them upon resale, should you want to upgrade. I suspect that the pre-asph 28mm Elmarits are good value at the moment but with the advent on the M their prices might just start to climb......

25zm is probably the best $ per centimeter, but it's a beast when comparing to 28 rit asph. So if you want something smaller then buy 28 rit asph else get 25zm and save some $$ and if you are going to buy non asph rit then get 25zm.

 

Depending on where you read the review, I think most of them have said that 25zm and 28 rit asph are pretty much on par in term of IQ but that's of course very subjective to how you view your pictures. I wasn't sure if wide angle is something I know how to use so I decided to go with 25zm since it's cheaper and probably be easier to sell when upgrading. Used price from last time I checked.. ($950 for 25zm vs $1900 for 28 rit asph USED)

 

You will enjoy the experience with either lens :)
