Perchance to dream...

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if it would it be possible for the wizards of Leica to provide M camera owners (similar to the DMR for R owners I guess) with a digital sensor to somehow attach to the back film door - thereby allowing M users with the ability to update to future sensors as technology (e.g. megapixels) is advanced. I apologize if this is overly simplistic in my thinking. Thanks!

It couldn't possibly fit with a big bulge on the back and a big lump on the bottom for the battery. There is also no way to attach the electronics, since the M cameras were not designed with a possibly digital future in mind.

Rick,

I am a great believer that 'anything is technically possible, its just a case of accepting the compromises'.

Most of the early digital MF solutions were digital backs grafted onto essentially mechanical cameras, so why not? In the case of the M6 maybe with a clunky shutter synchronisation, but in the case of the M7 maybe a more elegant solution to integrate into its electronic shutter?

I seem to remember that in late 2005 the (then) managing director of Leica was interviewed in the house magazine (an advertising circular sent to registered customers) and was asked if the digital M would be an attachment back, like the DMR. His answer was that would not fit the ethos of the M series because it would make the camera too large and heavy. He didnt talk about the integration issues, or limited shutter speed range or any other technical issues.
