Hi John

Although we were really looking forward to your event I'm afraid we aren't going to be able to make it, as I shall be away from the 7th to the 20th in Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Unfortunately I was born in the wrong bed and have to work for a living.

Hope the gathering is a great success and that the weather is kind to you.

Thanks for letting me know Tom. Better luck next time!

Ripon and I would be keen to join

- but can anyone give any advice on the best way to get there from London that doesn't involve a 5 hour drive or a train journey with multiple changes that would make it impossible to get there Saturday morning? I have looked and so far found nothing. Quite happy to travel up Friday night and stay somewhere near and do last leg on Sat if that is easier.

Nick, you'd both be extremely welcome. A variation on Andy's theme would be to go to York rather than Doncaster (about 2 hours on the train) then by car to Malton, Pickering, and a lovely drive over the moors to Whitby. Depending on your schedule you could stay over in York, or even do the whole journey and stay over in Whitby.

Thank you both

I thought of York - guessing there was more to see there than in 'Donny'. I shall see if this is possible, and maybe spend Saturday am in York.

What kind of time would one have to be in Whitby?

Then maybe stay a night in Whitby to catch the place on a Sunday morning before returning the car and getting the train back Sunday night

If this works love to come

Thanks for organising.

Can I suggest Dungeness (one of my favourite places) for a future seaside challenge?

Nick, I try to stop off at Dungeness when I'm driving back home from Dover. A strange place.

There's a pub near the lighthouse which would be a handy meeting place too.

Hope you can make it to Whitby. I think York would be a better bet than Doncaster for you <grin>.

Nick, I'm thinking of our meeting up at a suitable Whitby pub (we have one in mind, but final details to follow later) at 12 noon. Most of the Leica One Challenges and the first Seaside Challenge met on that basis. The we go off for our picture taking, and maybe meet up back again later in the afternoon and/or evening (optional).

If you are only passing through, with a view to getting to Whitby as quickly as possible, then Doncaster is considerably closer. But if Nick fancies an early start on the Saturday, and a longer drive, the North York Moors are certainly a better drive than the A66 through Middlesbrough :)

I used to have a project in Middlesbrough and would drive straight there from Chester, up the M6 and across the A66, but meander back home across the moors, stopping to watch black grouse. Not a bad life really.

Andy, according to Google maps Doncaster to Whitby is 90 miles and 2 hours, York to Whitby is 46 miles and 1h 12 mins.

Are you going to a different Whitby than the rest of us? <grin>

Many thanks to all you Northerners for the helpful advice.

I think I shall train up to York on Friday night, or earlier if Ripon can take the day off, spend 5 minutes photographing the cathederal sometime then hire a car Saturday am and drive through the Moors (is that where all those murders take place?) stopping for the odd bleak Northern landscape (weather permitting) to get to some Whitby pub for a dry lunch at 12 ish, then challege.

Only remaining question - would it be more sensible to stay the night in Whitby and photograph more of the place Sunday am, or will it be exhausted and more sensible to drive back to York and photograph there Sunday morning? I have never been to either, and rarely get the adventure of tresspassing north of Watford junction.

I feel uncomforatably like Michael Portillo now, what with all this northern train adventure

Forget I ever said Doncaster - I meant Darlington...

<...brainfade...>

Edit - even that doesn't work - it's about the same distance as York...

I'll get my coat.

Ripon and I have now taken Friday 12th off so we can join our Northern comrades for seaside rangefinder shinanigans.

We shall get the train up to York on Friday, spend the afternoon and night appreciating York, hire a car Sat morning for the drive to Whitby where we shall spend the night (I'm hoping for some kind of Danish late drinking experience) returning to York then London on Sunday

Look forward to seeing you all!

Look forward to seeing you both Nick. Enjoy York too. Unfortunately one of the crowning glories of York Minster (its east window) is in bits being restored for the next few years, replaced by a life size photograph. (See below for the real thing.)

I propose that we meet up at

The Granby Hotel

34 Skinner Street

Whitby

YO21 3AJ

at 12.00 noon on Saturday 13th April 2013. Skinner St is centrally located and easy to find (see streetmap.co.uk or similar). The Granby is a basic down-to-earth pub, with some excellent real ales, and simple, unpretentious food (gastro- it ain't; I understand that portion sizes are generous to say the least). Once inside there is a slightly higher level bar up a few steps where we will be meeting. Dogs are welcome.

Marilyn and I will be arriving on Friday evening, staying over Friday and Saturday nights. I can PM anyone who would like my mobile phone number, though I'd rather not post it here for the world to see. If anyone would like to meet up earlier (eg Friday evening) we can arrange that informally nearer the time.

Usual Forum Challenge rules apply. Steve (Unsworth) has very kindly agreed to coordinate the collection of images and so on, after the event.

I would like to propose a small variation on the first Brighton Seaside Challenge. I propose a modest £5 per person entry fee. The prize for the winner is then to nominate their favourite charity to which the prize pot is donated. Does that seem reasonable to people?

Finally got round to booking a B&B. a little annoyed that it was impossible to book just Saturday night, also I dread to think what the prices are like in Summer (£80 a night in April!).

Anyhow, enough of the grumpiness, see you all next month.
