hankg Posted March 18, 2007 Share #1 Β Posted March 18, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Lens design is all about prioritizing design goals to make the best compromise for the application and price target of a given lens. Leica now has film and digital cameras sharing the same lens line but those 2 media don't have the same optical requirements. What's good for film may be very bad for digital and visa-versa. If you have to allocate money for a lens that will perform at the edges of a 24x36 image then really fast ultra-wides are out of the question -to expensive, yet they might be economically feasable for the 1.33 sensor image circle. Wide angles whose rear elements sit close to the sensor and have light hitting the film at steep angles have meant an image quality advantage for film RF versus film SLR. But those sort of designs are not digital friendly, will future wides give up the film optimized design for one less problematic for digital? Rear elements for digital need better coating as digital sensors are more reflective then film. That's additional money allocated for a digital specific requirement, etc, etc, etc,. Is this a potential problem? will we get designs neither optimized for digital or film but a compromise between the two?
