audidudi Posted March 17, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted March 17, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm in the process of refurbishing my LC1. I have just purchased a replacement viewfinder assembly from Panasonic (surprisingly inexpensive at just $38.86, not including the electronic portion) and would also like to remove the many small scratches that have accumulated on its LCD. Â My first inclination is to simply polish the plastic using an automotive-type plastic polish since none of the scratches are deep enough to catch on a fingernail, but before I do so, I thought I'd check to see if anybody else has had any success with this approach and/or if there's another one I should consider. (If Panasonic sold the plastic cover separately, I'd just replace the part, but they don't and a replacement LCD module is $238.11, which is more than I want to spend on this camera at this point...) stephengilbert Posted March 17, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted March 17, 2007 I read somewhere the suggestion that toothpaste will polish a watch crystal. I tried it and it worked, but what it removed may have been no more than something adhereing to the face of the crystal rather than a scratch. stumac Posted March 17, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted March 17, 2007 Metal polish " Brasso " works wonders, Have used it on plastic panel meter fronts for many years. Some toothpastes may be too coarse. Â Regards Stuart
4season Posted March 17, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted March 17, 2007 As the LC1's window has an antireflective coating, I don't recommend any polishes.
morffin Posted March 17, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted March 17, 2007 Try a dab of shaving cream. I ve used it on my Canon screens and it woks great...My M8 screen has stayed scratch free somehow. Â By the way the shaving cream trick also keeps your hockey helmet visor from fogging up...its multi purpouse.
audidudi Posted March 19, 2007 Author Share #6 Â Posted March 19, 2007 I disassembled my LC1 this afternoon to install the new viewfinder and decided to take a closer look at the LCD. It turns out the plastic cover over the LCD is more-or-less permanently attached to the rear body piece (aka "rear cabinet" per Panasonic's online parts site), not to the LCD as I had thought, and the rear cabinet price is only $70, which is fairly reasonable as these things go. So, rather than polish out the scratches, I think I'm going to simply replace the part. Â Thanks for all of the input, though... :^)
